CANGate

I have been away for quite some time and noticed that there are a couple of threads about CANGate, so I thought I maybe should make a couple of comments.

Many comments in the threads are about why I don't give away or sell the design, so let me try to explain. I put a lot of thought and work into the design to make sure it would be reliable, would not drain the battery, etc. This goes for both the hardware and the software, and in the software I made some decisions which might not be obvious to the casual observer, but which I think have been proven to be solid. Anyway, what I am really trying to say is, that I take some pride in my work and would hate to see it deteriorate because someone did not understand the design intent. To insure that would not happen I would have to spend time documenting my decisions to make sure whoever took it over fully understood it. And at this point I would have to dig it all out and dust it off.

Over the last couple of year I have received 6-8 requests for giving away or selling the design, and I have responded in most cases with that I might be interested and to give me an offer. I can't remember a single instance where I heard from them again. In most cases I think it were people wanting it for themselves and not having the time or inclination to carry the project forward and support it. My primary reason for asking for some money is not for the money itself (while of course that would be nice), but more to see if the individual was looking for just making one or two, or to truly support the community by continuing to produce CANGate, and I never got the feeling for the latter.

Now you may ask why I stopped making them. Well, first and foremost, I got incredibly busy at a company we have been working to turn around, so time have been virtually non-existent. Second, while I have gotten great enjoyment out of working with the great majority of people here, both on CANGate installs and on other projects, I have also had some frustrations. When people in EU started using CANGate for SDS, I was in a situation where I could not exactly test it in my US setup, I could only verify that they worked for BT voice control. This put me in the situation where, while I have tested every single CANGate I ever shipped in my own car, I could not verify this particular function. So when they had problems getting SDS to work they would naturally contact me for advice, and we would exchange 4-8 emails with me making suggestion of things to try. After these emails, with the problem not resolved as far as I knew, I would hear absolutely nothing again (apologies to the few that actually did give me final feedback). This left me in the situation that when the next person had problems with SDS I would be back at square zero, having learned absolutely nothing from the previous problem. This finally got to me to the point that I basically did not want to deal with it any longer. The irony is that for SDS CANGate is really overkill, a much simpler board with only one CAN bus is all that is needed, I think zx-81 (?) actually pointed out such a board some time ago.

All that said I want to add that I have always felt an obligation to help people with CANGates, so if you have a CANGate and you experience problems with it, please don't let the above discourage you from contacting me.

WOW, this ended up being a lot of ramblings, so ADMINISTRATOR if you want to move this to OFF-TOPIC that is fine with me.

totaly agree with you...

but for a example, y tried to buy a cangate for many years, to resolve te clock problem and dont find one

for me cangate diserves the nobel in the car electronics but where find is

most responses is pay 500€ for that or the designer is not producing that anymore

i'm interest for real in continuing the producion of this device, but whats the price for your designe

1000€ 5000€ 10000€

contact my and if the price is resonable y buy it and continue the producion

many thanks
I will send you an email and we can discuss it further.

Unfortunately my talks with wizard1000 did not quite work out at this time. But in the process I found all the stuff and got it dusted off, so I am thinking I might have some time in the second half of December to make another batch. I have to look at the economics but I might have to raise the price $10.00-$20.00 depending on the current price for components. It would be good to gauge the level of interest so I can plan accordingly, so if anybody is interested, please shoot me an email and I will let you know my final decision.

OK, so there is definitely enough interest, so I will try get get another batch together. I will give an update in a couple of weeks when I hopefully have a better idea of a schedule. At that time I will also respond to the emails I have received to see if I can get a firmer idea of what the number of units ought to be.

Thank you all for your interest.

emailed in for one or two depending on how my projects pan out.

are there details on this device, simply a clock fix or does it replace the need for a new cangate module in terms of mfsw+rnse?
In the next week or two I will put an updated description here.

To address your specific question, yes it can pick up the signal between the buttons and the old 608 controller and will send the button codes on the CAN bus. It does require running a wire to one of the pins of the 608 controller which is not the easiest to pick up. I have been using it like that for the last 2-3 years in my 2.7t and I am happy with it.

Also, do have a pic of what the CANGate module looks like and how it is installed?
I posted a picture many years ago but I guess it got lost when the forum changed. I have attached the picture here next to my fob so you can get an idea of the size.

I have also attached the installation instructions, it should basically be wired into the RNS-E wiring adapter. All the connections (except for BT switch and MFSW connection) are available in the adapter.

I will update the instructions before I ship again.

Just a quick note. I got the ball rolling with the assembly house, and I will be able to keep the price at $160.00. Their standard delivery is 6-8 weeks, but they will try to expedite it and let me know in a week how much they can improve delivery time.

Thanks guys but I don't want any payment until I am ready to ship. My only payment option is Paypal at this point.

If you got my acknowledgement of receiving your email, then I have you on my list and I will contact you directly when I am close to shipping.

Hello, Bjarne,

I purchased a cangate a couple years ago from you, it is software v2.02 S.N 121

My car came with BT and MFSW, but I switched the wheel to the euro FBSW. I still have an S button in the dash although nonfunctional.

I would like to turn my S button switch into a BT voice control switch. I have bought the funk button that is a momentary switch so it could work.

I did not receive any instructions with my Cangate and am as ignorant as it comes to wiring and electronics.

Is it possible to wire up using the cangate the system in this way and is their some instructions on how to do it.

Will I need some updated software?

Thanks
Hi Saif,
Your CANGate came with my standard instruction sheet like I posted in message #30, just yours was for 2.02 (only difference is that 2.02 did not have the VIN option), so if you look at that you will see that the blue wire is for the switch, and you just need to wire it through a momentary switch to ground. No software update or option change is needed.

A quick update, I heard from the assembly house today and they have received all the parts, except for the PCB itself. They expect to receive that by the end of next week.

That puts us on track for me to receive the first ones for testing between Xmas and New Years. If they work OK I should be able to send out notices and start shipping early in January.

Another question... Can the cangate potentially work in the opposite direction...? I'd like to intercept an existing can bus message/event and trigger the existing switched circuit wires from the cangate. i.e: pressing the PTT button on the MFSW and triggering the cangate switch circuit to close/open?
Well, maybe. The USB version of CANGate has an open collector transistor connected to one of the connector pin. So it would potentially be possible to detect a CAN message and turn the transistor on, and turn it off for another message. Unfortunately the original intent was to use it to activate the "on" switch in a PC power supply for the CarPC people, so I put in a fairly weak transistor and the max current I would be comfortable with would be 20-30 mA. This would be far short of what would be needed to drive a standard automotive relay.

If you tell me a little bit more about what you want to do, I could be a bit more specific.

Another update. I received first article parts yesterday and have been testing the first one. I have found a couple of very minor problems and have fed that back to the assembly house. So we are still on schedule for me to receive all the units between Xmas and New Years to begin programming and testing them. I also still need to machine the cutouts in the box, and I hope to have that also done before New Years.

So far I have enough for everyone who have been in contact with me wishing a CANGate (including 22 for andream88 ), and I should be able to start shipping early in the new year.

The price will be $160.00 + shipping, and only payment option is Paypal.

I wish everyone a happy holiday,

OK, so I have been testing a number of them and have everything together. I will start sending emails out tomorrow and I will pretty much follow the order in which people contacted me. It will probably take me a week or so to get through the whole list, so please be patient, if you received a confirmation email from me then I have you on the list and I will get to you. I believe I have more CANGates than people have asked for so there should be no problems.

I will be shipping units to US with "keep on until key removed" option set and no other options.

To all other countries all options will be turned off.

Remember that clock fix and switch input are automatic so no option is needed. Also, since the serial input is now USB you can easily change the options yourself using a standard min-B USB cable and any terminal program (e.g hyper terminal in Windows, Terminal in MAC OS X).

The price is $160.00 plus shipping, $7.00 in the US. For other countries I will have to check individually, I believe shipping was around $20.00 to EU a couple of years ago. At this point Paypal is the only payment option and I ship to the address on the Paypal account. If anybody know a way to accept wire transfer from Europe I would be interested in finding out.

Thank you for your patience,
Bjarne

so most just get it to fix the clock?
Yes, that was the whole motivation for developing it originally.

I added a few other niceties over time, and the ability to install a switch to activate BT voice control for people without MFSW is probably the second reason people get it, especially in EU where it can be used for for RNS-E SDS and MFSW does not seem to be as common.

Next is the option to keep the RNS-E on until the key is removed, standard for EU software but US software.

Some people with DRL also like the option to switch between day/night mode based on the dimmer value rather than the light switch, since their lights are always on.

As you saw earlier I also implemented 'sniffing' the one wire communication between the MFSW button and the MFSW controller, so I did not have to spend a couple of hundred dollars on a new CAN enabled controller. This option is still considered experimental as I only know of one person aside from me using it.

Hope that sheds a little more light on possible options.

A quick note about the wire harness. There are three connections which I consider 'options' and not everybody has a use for them:

Pin 2 - GRY - Reverse - only used by people installing reverse camera in older cars.
Pin 7 - BRN - MFSW - only used by people hooking up to the non-CAN MFSW controller.
Pin 8 - BLU - PTT - used by many people without MFSW to initiate BT or SDS.

If you are not going to use one or more of these options, it is a good idea to cut the wire off, at least make it much shorter and make sure it can not short to anything.

By now everybody who expressed an interest in CANGate has been notified (a couple of weeks ago) and everybody who paid has been shipped. As usually happens a number of people who expressed interest did not get back to me to actually buy one, so I have some left over.

If anybody still wants one let me know, and thank you to all of you who purchased from this batch.:D

If you have any installation problems or questions, it will benefit everybody if you post it here.
