XM/Sirius and RNS-E

Ok, it looks like getting XM/Sirius to work requires an upgraded sat receiver:

Sirius for Symphony II/Concert II:
Part No. 8E0 057 593
XM for Symphony II/Concert II:
Part No. 8E0 057 593A
Sirius for RNS-E and/or with tire pressure monitoring system:
Part No. 8E0 057 593D
XM for RNS-E and/or with tire pressure monitoring system:
Part No. 8E0 057 593E

Since audio is possible with the US unit and the older sat receivers, I would guess that the CAN commands have changed to allow more devices (e.g. the TPMS) on the bus.

So, for the US unit ("E" and "R" units), installing the "D" or "E" sat receiver should enable sat radio (maybe you can sell your sat enabled radio together with the receiver  to get funding for the RNS-E upgrade).

The EU unit ("C" and "P" units) does not even see the sat receiver and has no option to select either XM or Sirius. So if you want to use sat radio, don't choose the EU unit.

From the 2005 Accessories catalogue:

EDIT: Loading the US software on a Euro RNS-E will allow the use of a second generation SAT receiver even with a Euro RNS-E. See quick links for details about how to load the US software on a Euro RNS-E.

The units they are selling there won't work with the RNS-E. It is funny that they have the RNS-E pic next to it though. :)
Good to know. So does anyone know the best place to get the correct receiver for an RNS-E? ideally at the best price? I'm enjoying Lucy, but I sure would like to have a variety of stations back!

I would imagine that that pix from clairs' site is applicable to the C6 A6 and D3 A8. It still has that MMI GUI....but doesn't necessarily mean it's compatible with the RNS-E. Just my .02. :)
I ordered mine from Clair. The new XM tuner (part# 8E0 057 593E) will work with the US RNS-E. I paid $450. The 593-A is not for the RNS-E.

Help! I just installed the updated Sirius HU (# 8EO 035 593 D), put it exactly the same spot as the older unit used with my Symphony II, used the same connectors. My RNS-E recognizes the Sat unit, it received a signal from Sirius and updated all the stations, it shows what is currently playing, everything works great, EXCEPT NO SOUND!

I have a EURO RNS-E that has been modified to US standards per Dirk's instructions in another string. It is working great, FM, AM, MP3, NAV all fine. Sirius is the last thing. Is there a different connection that needs to be made to the RNS-E, or is it a matter of software?

Thanks for the help!
Did you get the RNS-E adapter with CD changer support? If you didn't then you are missing audio left/right/gnd between the RNS-E and the old Symphony plugs.

Even though I did not get the new receiver yet my Euro unit with US software plays the sound from the preview channel.

The adapter was not made to support the external CD changer. Do I need to get a new adapter or can I retrofit the old one somehow?
Contact BayrischerS4, he may be able to get you the plug and wires you need. If not you can either get a new adapter or try to get the missing wires/plug from your dealer.
I will contact him with a PM. Thanks so much for your help, you are, as always, the Shell Answer Man!
Well I have a (4B0) EU RNS-E retrofitted in my 2000 S4. I just ordered the Sirius Satellite Tuner (8E0 057 593D) and will be installing it in a couple days. I've already converted my EU unit to play the US Navigation Disc. I've got to make a custom wiring harness to hook into my CDC plug and since I've got a Phatbox that custom wiring harness is going to be able to play both the Phatbox and the Sirius without a toggle switch!

I'll let you know more on Wednesday or Thursday when I get it hooked up. If someone has a pix of the antenna connectors or can get me the pinouts for this unit, I would be very happy. I am not going to get the Audi antenna so instead I'm going to get an aftermarket one and I've already got the correct connectors to change them around.
Is this what you are looking for?

Pin 7 of T8s (R CH sound)
Pin 6 of T8s (L CH sound)
Pin 5 of T8s (Spk GND)
Pin 1 of T8s (CAN L)
Pin 2 of T8s (CAN H)

From OEM SAT radio installed into '01 A6
Well I spoke with Lee and he confirmed those are correct for the "older" satellite tuners, but wasn't sure if Audi may have changed things. So to be real sure I'd like to have the auctual pinouts of that unit, especially since it may have changed. I doubt that they changed but I'd rather be safe.

The new receivers are a plug and play swap with the old ones, Proxus did it and seveal others as well. Even the TSB said use the old ones until no stock, then continue using the new ones (for non-Nav, non-TPMS cars). There is obviously a difference in the CAN-bus protocol but the electrical wiring should be the same.
That's good to know, I just hope this cable works like Lee & I planned!

Keep us posted...Lee H is great to share his SAT thoughts with this group.

Good luck!!
So if I am understanding correctly, a : Part No. 8E0 057 593D will work with a symphonyII headunit , in an identical fashion to the standard Part No. 8E0 057 593 for sirius. I am planning on upgrading to a RNS-E in the future but want Sirius now....so would u guys recommend getting the newer tuner from Clair? Both should be simple PNP, right? Thanks.

Proxus said that his "E" receiver did NOT work with his B6 Symphony II. Nobody has posted confirmation that the new sat receiver will actually work with the "old" (B6 or C5) Symphony II. Based on what has been posted so far I would say that the B7/A4 Symphony II has a different part number and is using different CAN command to control the 2nd generation sat receiver.

Everybody feel free to correct me...
Confirmed 2nd generation sat receivers ("D" and "E" units) work with Euro unit flashed with 0020 US software.

XM receiver, 1st to 2nd generation upgrade
i have the receipt from the dealer that says

PART NO.
R3 8E0-057-593

So does this mean I have the R unit? Is this correct for my b7 A4 that does not have tire pressure monitoring and does have the RNS-E nav? Sorry my misunderstanding.

No, this is a first generation sirius tuner. You need the same part number with a "D" after it. 8E0 057 593D.
I'm a bit confused

ok, sorry for the knuckle-head question, but can someone help interpret what will need?

I have a 06 A4 with the Bose Symphony II and XM. I plan to purchase a RNS-E and want to retain the XM satellite radio

My question:

Will my current XM reciever work with the RNS-E unit and which unit will i need to make the transitition easier - the latest US OEM or the EU unit flashed with US software (and which version software should i have)?

Thanks for your help in advance!
