What's the point of phatnoise/ipod?

Since you can get 4gigs of mp3 on SD cards, what it the point of having phatnoise or ipod connection? I just drop in two SD cards with mp3s and have endless listening.

Am I missing something? Is it just the coolness factor?

phatnoise and iPod are 20,40, ... GB - so you can have you whole music collection with you.

The iPod has one other BIG advantage ..... it goes with you wherever you are.

My stepson has a video iPod (so he has his movie clips with him at all times too) so I can see the benefits most days.
the "MIX" function on the RNS-E absolutely SUCKS!!.. that is my biggest reason for connecting my iPod..

also i have 2 x 1GB SD card, which but alot of tunes -- but i have ~14GB on my iPod..

Because you can't fastforward the songs on the radio......so you store the songs locally and you have more freedom to listen to what you want....when you want. If you are thinking about this upgrade....you should start "ripping" you audio collection. See my phatbox thread in AW for some more background:

I agree with you. After having the iPod connected I cannot see any reason why someone would want to do this if he has the RNS-E. Ok, a phatbox has much more space but at least for the iPod it's so inconvinient to browse through the playlists and find the song you want to listen to. Even my girl friend, who was asking for a way to connect her iPod for months now, says that she will stay with the SD card I gave her.

With a Symphony or Concert head unit it makes more sense because there are no SD slots. With the RNS-E not, except for that little issue that you can only have about 450 songs on each card (which I hope they will fix via software update).
It just depends on what you want for your car and for your music. Each option has pros and cons and each personality will pick a different option as fits. If you don't see the point of the phat or ipod, then just don't use them.

FWIW, I don't use either one because my satellite radio is always on.
All good points.

I think I'll be listening to SAT myself once I get it installed, and deal with the lack of good control of SD card music when I want to listen to my MP3s.
Personally I like having all 93gb of my music with me at all time in my Phatbox. This way if a friend wants or likes some music I have, they can make a copy of it. Its just really nice having access to all of my music.

I also have the OEM Sirius but I really don't listen to it as much as I thought I would. I guess its just a nice change every now and then.

I also have 1gb SD card in also that I usually put some new music on until I get tired of it. Then I'll move it over to the Phatbox.

I have so much music it will make you sick!
Its too bad that none of these solutions including the SD slots don't play WMA files. The source I download my music from only offers WMAs.
You can easily convert WMA to MP3 using one of many free softwares available on the web.
