What did Audi intend the CAR button for??

I was watching the newly discovered Audi Channel on Sky last night (ch 251 i think) and they were demonstrating MMI on the A8 which works exactly the same as the RNS-E and has the same 8 buttons Radio - CD/TV - Name - Tel - etc etc

However the CAR button allows you to control the heating and a few other things and lets you set things like the delay on the lights after you lock the car etc.

Why would they bother putting the CAR button on the RNS-E if it doesn't do anything useful? Or does it do more on a factory fit A3/A4? Or is there a missing wire that brings all this to life?

But not on the RNS-E, or has this recently changed?
