I have RNS-e in a b5 s4 and everything was working fine until i switched dvd players now even without the dvd player installed i get the same issue:

when i turn the unit on I get picture for a few seconds then a "TV not installed" message however I still get sound.

Odd thing is as soon i turn to accessory power or have car running TV works fine (Meaning "TV not installed" goes away and picture returns). I can even use gala switch for in-motion video without problems. Also maybe unrelated but i get a little alternator feedback noise only when using dvd player.

i cleaned/redid the wiring but to no effect any ideas?

i was going to try and check the coding for both TV (57) and RNS-e (56) would that make sense? Also again the infamous plug/unplug technique

i will be installing BT wiring tomorrow so will have things apart to check

as you have probably seen i have a similar problem with random "TV not installed" but i still had sound..

it was working fine for a month or 2, then i swapped units and it worked, then i swapped back and i had this problem.. i swapped to the 2nd unit and it still didnt work..

unfortunately i never found a solution..

at 1st i just unplugged/replugged everything on the RNS-E side several times, but it still didnt work.. then i tore everthing apart, even opened up the little boxes to see if there were any loose connections or burnt components.. i didnt find anything, but when i put it all back together it WORKED.. not satisfied with the "none solution" i tore everything apart again and reconnected and still worked -- it has been working flawlessly for the past month or 2..

check the "SOURCE" menu when you have the problem to see if the "TV" option appears/disappears.. mine did..

Since this is all CAN, did you check that your CAN wires are properly twisted and not to close to power wires? Might be one reason for CAN to go crazy...

on source when i turn on unit (just radio) i see tv for about 5 seconds then it disappears - power off/on unit and shows tv again for 5 seconds then disappears - i can do this forever with no change.

i can check CAN again but was working fine before and i didn't change anything - only thing is the working with acc or car on affecting the CAN signals. I mean the second i turn to acc power or car on it works no break in sound the picture just appears. The Dietz harness runs CAN wires near power but I will make sure i have good twists tonight.

Strange part is it half works (sound keeps coming). I guess ill treat it like windows and try "reseting" a few times to see if it fixes itself.

Do you think it crazy to try a new unit? I am talking with my US Dietz distributor about it now.

what about coding the RNS-e for TV tuner or resetting it?

Do you think SAT Radio could cause issues?

Thanks for input i am afraid this mightbe like SAT radio install my car didn't want to recognize it forever then after nearly giving up it works - i unhooked it about 50 times?

it seems odd that it works perfectly with ignition on but intermittantly without..

AFAIK the device tells the RNS-E it is present via CAN, so it could definitely be some sort of CAN issue.. no idea how or why it will continue playing audio but drops the video signal??..

i thought it may have something to do with the microprocessor in the device generating the CAN signal??..

i can say mine did they same thing, then started working again (though i did not have the with/without key senario)..

well at least it sounds as though i can lean towards CAN issue which makes sense and maybe as you said the chip inside the box.

Step 1 will be to disconnect a few more times and see if get anything to happen.

Step 2 is there any coding that may be affecting i noticed for STG 57 some settings seem to affect waking not sure if this applies and not sure of my setting - do you know what your coding is and would this even make a difference?

i have never looked at STG 57, so mine should still be default..

STG 56 i did not recode for TV tuner when i added the dietz 1417

thanks didn;t have to code either after installing it but thought maybe something is conflicting with it so better to code correctly.

one thing i notcied last night (didn't have much time to look) is that i sometimes don't get video in-motion warning (even if i clear the standard discalimer quickly)...I use a gala switch not 1280.

anyways took things apart yesterday no luck maybe today after replacing/updating harness for bluetooth phone it will decide to work...also will try some coding of unit

otherwise going to look at swaping unit itself if things work or don't friend gets one so no loss.

so yesterday i did a few things to see if i could discover what was happening.

started with dis/reconnecting things no luck there.

then used VAG and noted some interesting things
1) tv picture works when using VAG to access navigation or radio
2) turning on headlights while using VAG and seeing tv results in momentary "tv not installed" message before picture resumes
3) cleared some CAN bus errors from cluster and radio (looked to be from disconnecting things) - I will rescan today to see if they reappear.

my thought is to pull cluster and check taps as well as dis/reconnect the plugs and when i finish installing the phone to redo the CAN connections and replace the adaptor harness.

question is does this sound Dietz related or car related?
the big thing is it used to work and after reviewing things apparently seems to have started slowly meaning occasionally it would go out and whoever was in car would simply turn off then on.
the fact that the Dietz is supplying the CAN signal is what makes me think it could be the culprit

I know this is a super old thread but I' have the same issue and haven;t found a cure.

The audio still comes through but no volume control is possible so I assume it's just leakage on the RNSE.

All works perfect with ign. or car on but no key equals no joy.

Have you checked that the K-line is connected?

You need to add the K-line.

Without it you will not be able to access the tuner with VAG-COM on your B6 which only has dual K-line diagnostics (no CAN diagnostics on the B6).

So you need to run a wire from the K-line pin at the back of the RNS-E to the K-line pin on the TV tuner.
