Traffic Report

So on my 5 hour trip to upsate NY this evening I was listening to the radio (which I hardly ever do) Had a station on listening to some tunes and all of sudden screen turns over to blue framing and shows the words TRAFFIC REPORT in top left and Big Jim located below. Luckily I was close by home and recognized the name which is a traffic reporter and realized what was going on. I hardly listen to radio so I wasn't sure how many of you experieinced this before. Odd thing about it is I had one station on and when the traffic report came up it showed info from another station. BTW, it also had the word CANCEL on screen and the scroller had the option to cancel the report. Thought I would share that for anyone who is interested.

You are still using the Euro software, are you? There is one station in the US which is preparing to broadcast TMC messages (forgot the name of the station but it got mentioned here somewhere as well). The RNS-E has a dual tuner, one is always looking in the background for a better RDS frequence and a station which broadcasts TMC.

In theory it would be possible that your RNS-E picked up some test packets of a future TMC service. If this is true this would another reason to stay with the Euro software and a patched US map...

This was on s/w 0100 f/w 51 iirc on C unit.

BTW, If I were to flash my other 0360 unit to US would this work and allow me to operate it with US map disc?

In addition there was the anchor giving the live update on traffic. When he stoped the screen reverted back to my previous music station.

That sounds like TMC

I wouldn't count on having TMC functionality after update because TMC feature is located in the same sector where radio features are. US update is changing those sectors to adjust frequencies Am/FM and add sat radio feature.

I could be wrong but since two separate companies are working on US and EU software, there is few differences in features. NAVTEQ for example is working on system called "XM Instant Traffic". This alone makes me think that Audi will lean towards this system in US instead of TMC.....but who knows :roll:

I had the traffic report screen come up once. I was listening to MP3's from the SD slot and the screen changed to "Traffic Report" screen for about 3 seconds and back.
The only problem was that it wasn't a traffic report, it was some religious sermon (it was about 3 am).

I do have an EU "C" unit with 0100.

I'll beat everyone to it...I wasn't in need because of doing something that would require it.

That's a common problem in the UK, the broadcasters aren't too careful about when they turn on the traffic report bit in the RDS data stream.

It often gets turned on early and/or off late (or is missed if you go into a weak signal area), so you get to listen to all sorts of rubbish instead of your MP3s! (sports, news, adverts, ...)

I had this happen to me too on my last trip across NY state to NYC a few months ago. I was pleasantly surprised. MP3 play was interupted twice in a 7 hour drive to hear a local traffic blurb.
