Those with RNS-E and Phatbox's may want to try this.

I copied this from a user on the phathack forums. Some infomation about the Phatbox first:

1) The system rushes you. If you don't press anything every few seconds it drops back into track mode and just starts playing. Ok on a clear road but dangerous around town as I was trying to keep it in say artist mode by pressing a key every couple of seconds.

2) The previewing of tracks might be nice if the preview continued playing seamlessly if you didn't press anything. On my Audi A4 though, the head unit mutes the CD changer input temporarily when the system goes back to track mode. This means that a track starts playing then a few seconds into the intro you miss a bit.

3) Changing modes (i.e. changing disks on the head unit) causes a mute (as discussed above). Poorly chosen wait timing in the factory .ini file meant that the beep before the voice announcement was always fadding in as it was played. Just didn't sound very professional.

So, after much trial and error I have come up with a new phatbox.ini that I feel solves my problems. The main change is that the system does not do previewing of tracks. Instead, it sits there waiting for you to continue moving through artists / albums. Also it does not drop back into track mode automaticaly. When you find the artistst / album you want you need to move back to cd1 manually to commence playback. I think this gives you more control. For example, if you are moving through your artist list thinking of who to listen to you can leave the radio to negotiate something tricky on the road then come back to continue browsing the same selection when it has passed. Also, the prompts remind of where you are after 10, 20 and 60 seconds - just in case the traffic lights you went through scrubbed your mind! Currently, the unit gives up and drops back into track mode after 2 minutes of waiting but I might just extend this to 5 or 10 minutes - in case you were perhaps answering a phone call mid selection. Finally, I also fixed the wait times so that you don't ever (hopefully) hear audio fading in as a result of the head unit disk change mute. The relevant section of my phatbox.ini is shown below. Cut and paste it into the appropriate section of your own phatbox.ini if you want to give it a try. Don't forget to do a backup of your existing .ini first though.

P.s. A little tip for finding which section of the phatbox.ini file your setup uses is to change the menu 45 item from:

menu.45.action=PLAY:/dos/tts/radiotype.mp3;PLAY:/dos/tts/a.alpha.mp3;PLAY:/dos/t
ts/selected.mp3

to

menu.45.action=PLAY:/dos/tts/radiotype.mp3;PLAY:/dos/tts/b.alpha.mp3;PLAY:/dos/t
ts/selected.mp3

Use a different letter for the menu 45 item in each section then go to the car and see which letter gets spoken when you go into the first of the radio selection menus. Again - do a backup of your .ini file first.

Oh and good luck - anything posted here works on my system and I can't see how it could break yours but use at your own risk...

I haven't tried this yet, but I will. I think with a little tweaking this could make navigating the Phatbox with the RNS a little better. If anyone needs help with this just email me.

If this doesn't work out to good for someone let me know and we can edit the .ini file to your liking.
