Taking US RNS-E to Europe

1253 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Haaggie
I'm shipping my A4 cab with RNS-E unit from US to the Netherlands. I had always hoped that I could simply insert a Europe DVD to make it all work, but apparently not. Can a local Audi dealer help me adapt the unit? Should I do it myself (I'm not a very technical guy)? What is the expected cost to make it work?
Thanks in advance!

Audi won't help you other than saying that you will have to replace your RNS-E. How long will you be staying in Europe? What is the current software loaded on your RNS-E?
Total replacement would be disappointing, as it is in mint condition. Most likely costly as well (?)

Don't know exact version, but I purchased the A4 cab 3.0 with DVD nav in feb 05 (it had just arrived in the US). Can't check the car as it is on a boat as we speak.

I intend to stay in Europe indefinitely and sell the car in about a years time (in Europe)

What would you recommend?
You have a couple of options:
- Flash your US unit with the Euro software. You will loose warranty but you should be able to end up with a "real" Euro unit, able to use European maps.
- Sell you unit to someone in the US and buy a new unit from Audi. I would estimate your net costs would still be about $2000 (new Euro unit ~$3k, old US unit sold for ~$1000).
- Sell your US unit and get a Euro unit from one of the sellers here on the board, some may even be willing to do a swap plus a little money.

Replacing the unit is pretty straight forward, not a big deal at all. My choice would be to scan the Sale forum for trusted European seller and contact one of them.
if you plan to sell it there, i would certainly 2nd the idea of trading your US unit for an EU unit from a trusted seller on this forum and swapping the units..

swapping the units is 5-10 min job.. it is probably easier than making an US->EU update disc..

besides it would be ashame to load EU software on a US unit and vice versa when a reasonable deal could be arranged i am sure..

good luck..

I'd like to think I am one of those trusted sellers on this board. :D

I'll make a swap with you when the time arrives if you are interested.

Thanks for the replies. I will wait for the arrival of my car, yell at Audi for misinforming me and then locate a swap opportunity via this board

Cheers

Jochen,

Swapping is the best option for you: I live in The Netherlands, The Hague (Den Haag). You can contact me, no problem, and I can swap the unit for you. I've the newest EU-units on stock, and I'm also a trusted member...Please check the section 'for sale' for my feedback..
