Should I update my EU unit with US software? is it possibly?

hey guys i got a 8E0 035 192 C unit in my A4. I have an original US DVD, a modified DVD which i currently use, and the update software from the thread where Dirk "broke" his unit. However i haven't updated it to the US firmware. What would you suggest to upgrade? however im not even sure if the version "C" takes the upgrade. thanks

Hi, for sure the C-version will take the update. I'll recommend you to update the unit, with 1 risk: there's no way for roll back at this time, maybe in the future. The unit with the US firmware is much better then the EU with modified disc, but it depends on what you really want. Check this forum for the pro's and contra's of a real US unit (pro: satelllite radio, contra: disclaimer always by start up, etc..). When you update the unit, you can't use your modified disc anymore, you'll need the real US disc.
Several people have updated the 8E0 035 192C and the 4B0 035 192P with the US software, so yes, it is possible. However, black and white, there are still a few open questions which you should consider before flashing your unit.

If you have an Euro unit and the patched North American map DVD, if you don't mind not seeing toll roads and some very small streets in rural areas, if you don't want to use SAT radio and AM, then stay with the patched DVD and Euro software.

If you want SAT radio and a fully functional navigation unit (no missing streets and similar), your only option is to flash your Euro unit with the US software. However, nobody knows yet if a future software update will be possible when the next US DVD/software gets released. And nobody has done the conversion back to the Euro software yet (in case you don't like that nasty disclaimer or want full phone integration).

It is easier to create a flash CD than creating a patched map DVD. But patching the map DVD is the safer way to use an Euro RNS-E in North America.

Kind of hijacking the thread...
How can I determine the unit is a true US or just a EU with US software besides the serial # label on top of the unit?

I am kind of not trusting those labels 100%???

on EU unit second button from the left says CD/TV ....on US unit it says SD/CD
also the 1st button on the left
EU = "RADIO"
US = "FM'|'AM"
Other check: go to CAR and check SW-version. If this doesn't give a number but a XX-version: you have a patched unit. A real US unit gives a complete SW version nr.

EU units upgraded with US software work great.

- AM / FM frequencies are working
- original US/Canada maps are working
- SAT radio - XM/Sirius is working
- TEL function is working

I can easy say that for this day they work even better than US units :D because TEL functionality is fully working (Caller ID etc.). I suspect that US units will have this ability soon too.

Why not wait and upgrade to the US software when the new map DVD is released later this month? Although I must say I am not looking forward to shelling out another 200 and change to navteq.
