RNS-E on '03 A4 Cabrio: difficult installation!

Hello people!!,
today I've tried a first installation attempt for my new RNS-E system..

My car already has an OEM RNS-D system, so the installation had to be very very simple.. and almost plug & play. But something went wrong..

WHAT I DID:
- got the RNS-D to RNS-E adapter from Kufatec;
- got the SMB to FAKRA adapter;
- got the NaviPlus DX to RNS-E antenna diversity adapter;
- got the special keys to remove the old equipment.

WHAT I DID NOT:
- the old TMC-box was still in place: I didn't disconnect the plug from the rear trunk as the installation was a main test.

All connectors were right: all plugged in. Connected the two free long wires (CAN-H and CAN-L lines) coming from the Kufatec RNS-E adapter to pins number 13 and 26 of the 26-pins car connector, in order to have a kind of CAN-bus connection.

WHAT IS WORKING:
- radio is OK
- balance/volume/etc controls are OK
- unit is globally working fine
- navigation is OK

WHAT IS **NOT** WORKING:
- the colour FIS instrument is not recognizing the RNS-E, so I haven't got any of the old RNS-D navigation and/or radio stations info on it.
- if I turn on the car lights, the RNS-E is not lighting up
- RNS-E brightness control is not working

I suspect the problems are due to a CAN-bus problem.. can please anyone help?

Have you double-checked that the CAN-H and CAN-L are connected correctly? If you interchange them, it will not work. That is the only thing that comes to mind from your description.
Definitely Can Bus.

The Canbus connected to your old Navi was the Bosch Canbus not the Entertainment Canbus.

You can reroute this signal by connecting some pins on the connector of the TMC Tuner.

But a better idea would be to connect 2 wires from the Dash to the Canbus input from your Navi.

I don't have the exact pin numbers right now. But when I get home I promise you to post them over here.

Regards
tony

I agree, the issue is most likely the CAN wires...
Okay.. it took a little bit longer, but here are the pin numbers:

OPTION 1

Audi A4 (B6):
- Disconnect the blue connector (backside of your instrument cluster)
- pull out the little blue plastic piece and push the connector out of it's house.
- You can order little pin's at your Audi dealer to use with this connector.

I'm not 100% sure in your situation pin 19 en 20 will be occupied.
If they are occupied it's better to follow the procedure at option 2!

Your instrument cluster is creating the can signals and send them out with these 2 pins.

- Pin 20 (black white) is CAN HIGH
- Pin 19 (black yellow) is CAN LOW

if you extend these 2 pins to your RNS-E ,it will work without any problem.

OPTION 2

Find your TMC Tuner (Can gateway) and pull out the 12 pin connector.
The TMC tuner will be located (most of the times) in the trunk of your car.

Dismantle the 12pin connector and connect PIN 2 WITH PIN 8 (canbus low)
Connect PIN 3 with PIN 9 (can bus high)

Don't forget to connect the Antenna wires together because the TMC will not function anymore (all the TMC/Canbus data will be handled by the RNS system).

Don't CONNECT THE TMC AGAIN.. IT'S NOW OBSOLETE. SO THE 12 PIN TMC CONNECTOR WILL NOT BE USED ANYMORE.. IT HANGS LOOSE IN YOUR TRUNK.

Thank you guys for the fast and precious info you have provided!!

Let's get practical: I've written a new post (see http://www.navplus.us/forum/viewtopic.php?t=501 for details) in order to know how to take apart the rear trunk lining..

Hope I'll be able to thank you very soon taking a look at my WORKING RNS-E!
Almost finished but.. CD changer is not playing disks!

Hi people!!,
this morning I've finally finished my RNS-D to RNS-E conversion!!

What is wrong is that the glovebox 6 CD changer is not playing the CDs. The main unit shows 3 slots are empty and 3 are not, so it's virtually well connected to the navigation unit. I do select the CD than it stands for a couple of seconds and gets back to the CD 7 "DVD Navigation CD". Center dashboard display is showing a "NO CD" message.. What can it be? The CAN-bus already had the CD changer so it must be an issue between the CD unit and the RNS-E. Does somebody have a clue??

PS: I'll soon post a new message writing down how to upgrade from RNS-D to RNS-E..
Re: Almost finished but.. CD changer is not playing disks!

Hi people!!,
I got the solution for the CD changer problem, so I'm glad to share it with you..

This is the right procedure to make the RNS-E know and play your audio CD's from the OEM CD changer:
- Unload all the disks from the CD changer
- Unload the maps DVD-ROM from the main RNS-E unit
- Power off the system (take the keys out of the ignition)
- Power back on with the ignition
- Load a disk or more into the CD changer
- Load the maps DVD-ROM into the main RNS-E unit

And that's all!

Glad I helped, I came across this problem the day before your post on an A4 glove box CD changer /RNS-E installation, but we didn't need to remove the DVD at all, just the CD's.

Nice trick. What part number is your CD changer?

Hi AudiA4B6US!,

Unluckily I din't need to take it apart: it's the OEM 2003 Audi glovebox 6 CDs changer..

Exactly like this:

RNS-D to RNS-E upgrade

Hello,

I read your helpful posts on the navplus web page about your experience upgrading from an RNS-D system to an RNS-E system. I have just received a RNS-E system myself and will upgrade from the RNS-D factory-installed in my 2003 A4 Avant (European model - I am in Europe).

If you don't mind I have a couple of questions for you about the replacement project:

1. The GPS antenna connector is different on the RNS-E from the RNS-D. Can I get this plastic connector off my existing antenna wire and swap it for the RNS-E connector? (I have a RNS-E gps antenna connector on a external GPS antenna that was delivered with my new system).

2. I guess I need to dismantle my TMC connector the way it has been described in the forum? Any idea how to get to the TMC box on an A4 Avant? Do I need a special tool to remove the wires from the TMC connector?

3. Do I need a special coupler to attach the antenna wires to each other once they have been removed from the TMC box?

4. What do I do with the 26-pin connector that is attached to the back left-hand side of the RNS-D unit? Are there any essential wires in this connector for the RNS-E? Or do I just leave it loose behind the new RNS-E?

5. What about the 30-pin connector on the back of the RNS-E? Do I need to plug anything in there? (From looking at the forum it seems like not, but I'd be happy for some confirmation.

Thanks very much for any advice/help!

Help...

Hello,

i have an A4 Cabrio 8H from september 2002. It had the audi phone, cdchanger, bose and RNS-D with TMC.

I installed an RNS-E unit (8E035192D). My CD Changer is 8E0035111B.
It came with a cable and fakra ..

The Nav unit works
The CD changer is seen (also which slots are filled)

The illumination does not work
the fis does not work
the cd changer will not play a cd

Reading this post i figured the can was not connected.
I also tried the trick with the unloading of the cd's

I then carefully checked the cabling (focussing on the can).
I found that wires 13 and 26 from connector (26 pin) were not going to 9 and 10 from the D:/powerconnector.

So i fixed this but it still did not resolve anything.

The Audi dealership tells me i should come in so that they can recode the car. However, i do not read anything about recoding... in this article.

I am running into uncertain territory.. Need help.

You have to check three things:
- recode the RNS-E for A4 Cabrio, since it's an A4 unit it's likely not coded for the Cabrio
- make sure the CAN wires go from the 26 pin connector to the Quadlock and
- connect CAN in/out and the HF antenna in/out at the TMC tuner which should be installed somewhere in you trunk
The first i understand

The second I did.

So why the third?? That i do not understand.
