RNS-E Installation, Cant Find Answer

1967 Views 14 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  NSX JR
Hi,

All I want to know is what conector and pin number Gala, Ignition, and Illumination are on the RNS-E. I think i've figured out Gala is B Connector Pin 3. But im not sure what the other 2 are. Also can someone confirm that im correct with the gala. Also behind the instrument cluster my black wire for ignition was on pin 1 not pin 7 like ive read. So should i coonect in to the black or pin 7?

GALA is indeed pin B3.

There are no pins for ignition or illumination. The RNS-E receives the ignition and illumination status data over the CANbus communication lines.
Does that mean i use the can bus for the ignition and illumination but the speed signal is still through the gala wire because i have an a6? if thats the case will i still be able to switch the gala wire for video in motion?

Yes to both questions.
Thanks to NSX JR and PetrolDave for answering my questions, I think I have just one more. I've read a post about putting in the wires for can and it mentions using cat5 cable as its already twisted, do the to wires used for can have to be twisted as I have already made up the 2 cables as well as the cable for the speed signal with connectors, but I haven't twisted them. Could this cause me problems? As i don't want to have to make them again unless I have to.

I used CAT5 cable for my OEM Sirius Tuner CAN signals. I didn't do anything to it. I just found my wires and connected them!

It could cause problems, but it might not!

CAN bus signals are very low voltages so they are subject to interference, twisting the cables makes this less likely.

So you might be OK without twisting them, but Audi do go to great lengths to specify how repairs must be twisted so it's not advisable.

It's your call, but if it were me I would re-make the cables.
I used speedwire from streetwires (search on autotoys.com for mor details) to run a CANbus, power and ground from dash to trunk for OEM Sirius tuner and it hasn't been an issue. I imagine the wires were twisted a bit (maybe one full twist for every 5") but not as much as the Audi spec calls for. Either way, if you haven't run the wires yet, it probably makes sense to twist them as much as you can now.

Good luck!
Thanks again for everyones help on this, i'm almost there now just need to source somewhere that I can get the 2 pins for behind the instrument cluster for can H and L. They are refered to in this article, it says that there should be some spare on one of the connectors but i have none.

I could do with somewhere in the uk if anyone knows of anywhere.

Cheers

Order this part from your audi dealership, it will have a pin on each end for you to use: 000-979-018
Went down to the local dealer and they had one of these in stock, iv'e just finished soldering it up and it seems to work. Well sort of, the nav unit is now recieving a can bus signal because i get illumination but when the pin is entered to unlock the unit it just goes back to the pin entry. I've tried several times but the same happens. Is this a vag issue?
Let it sit a couple of minutes with ignition off or try to reboot (RADIO+SETUP until it reboots), one of both has fixed this issue for a couple of people.

You may want to check out my RNS.pdf file on my website. It may anwser many of your questions about your installation. Just click on my signature below.
Thanks NSX JR for pointing me towards that guide, I found it very usefull! Its an excerlant guide and should be the first thing anyone looks at when thinking about doing an install in an A6. I got everything working perfectly, except the eta thing that everyone is suffering from.

Thanks once again.
