I know your all thinking what is this guy thinking.
Ive got a 99.5 with the symphone 1 2din. But my instrument display has the analog clock. So no display info correct. what does the can emulator do?
Can I get a newer instument display with all the can bus stuff or am I just plane out of luck and have to go with the nav plus.
Any info or ideas would be great.

Sorry about all these questions Im a newb and there is still a ton of links to read:)

This has been tried before but they never succeeded in getting all the errors fixed the new cluster showed. Many little things have changed and it would not be worth the effort.

What you could do though is to get one of those CAN-bus adapters. They create the proper CAN signal from ignition, light, reverse and (some) speed which can be used by the RNS-E. You won't have the navi or radio information shown in your DIS though.
so there is no way to get the display to work even with a display swap for a newer one.
So if I get the can bus adapter the unit will work as it is suppose too and I can add all the other options. Except I will not have info in my display cluster ie radio and navigation. will it still work for all the other warning lights like fuel low brake pads low etc?

Thanks for your help.
also do you have a link for the adapter

Thanks
If you would swap the instrument cluster the RNS-E could talk to to the cluster and display navi and radio information. But the new cluster wouldn't work with your car, showing airbag errors, ABS/ESP errors, washer fluid errors and the immobilizer may not work either.

There were some guys over on a4-freunde.de who tried this and never completed this task.

Even if you get the CAN-bus adapter, all you get is that your RNS-E will stay on and the button will light up when you turn on the lights. It won't talk to your cluster and it will have the wrong time. You would still need to get the speed and revers signal from somewhere else too.

IMHO if the proper CAN is not present, there are most cost effective options than the RNS-E.
what do you suggest> will the older nav plus work or am I out of luck with an oem navigation. if the display in the instument cluster doesnt work thats ok since any after market stuff wont have it either it will just have audible voice info which the audi units have correct. theres just no place to mount stuff attractivly in an audi
I'm not the expert on the RNS-D but there is definitely a Euro unit which fits your car. Maybe Ted has some comments.
lance,
see my posts in the CD-based section.

You've got to weigh some things first.
a) Do you really want info in the display...but don't want to swap you cluster out (then you want a C-Navi system). C-Navi's are rare and hard to come buy (even on ebay.de). Also, Navteq doesn't produce many updates for the C-Navi community (once every 3 years; last update was Feb 2004).

b) If you can live without the info display (while keeping your current cluster), then go for a D-Navi. More map updates, better firmware and slightly faster than C-navi....etc...etc.

Heck, I might even sell you my D-Navi when I decide to install my RNS-E. :)

Good luck!
