Just been reading an article in 'The Audi Magazine' which is an Audi publication in the uk. It basically confirms what the email at the start of this post says, but it also implies that it is only a decoding/software matter and that they will be working on a flash upgrade and new software for the older sat nav systems in the A3 and A4's.

I get TMC info from French stations occasionly so I presume my system is already capable of receivng and decoding the non-uk tmc info.

Cheers

sent this....

Hi

I have a 2005 Audi A4 equipped with the very expensive DVD Sat Nav system.

I occasionally get TMC for french, dutch and belguim roads whilst in the UK but never get it for the UK roads despite having the latest maps.

I was wondering when this would be available since it seems to be available on aftermarket devices such as NAVMAN and TomTom which cost as little as £300 and TMC obviously works with the sat nav but is not enabled for the UK.

Many thanks

I got an entirely different responce...

Thank you for your recent e-mail regarding TMC.

The Audi A3 works on a different operating system to the Audi A6 and A8.
An entirely new DVD system is being developed by Audi and Trafficmaster to include TMC on this model. Currently no ETA has been confirmed for the release of this system. May I suggest that you register your interest with your local Audi Centre who will be more than happy to contact you once further details are available.

Kind Regards

Customer Service Manager

So the RNS-E in the A3 and the A4 are the same so why such a different responce...

No response as yet!

i wonder if we should point out that it works in europe with the existing DVD so it cant be that difficult..... I think we are being led up the garden path!

BTW this thread is hidden in multimedia - should it be in maps or the main rns-e section to get lots of people writing to audi for max impact. I wonder how many RNS-E units there are in the UK?

I replied back to them and asked them what the update would entale...

This was the reply.

Thank you for your recent e-mail regarding your Audi A3.

I have today spoken to the Audi Technical Department who have confirmed that a new DVD disc with updated software is being produced for this model. Unfortunately no ETA can be confirmed at present for the release of this disc. I hope this information is useful to you. If in the future I can be of any further assistance.

I have replied to Audi CS with the following email:

Mike,
Thank you for the response to my query regarding TMC in my 2003 A4. I do however feel that I(and perhaps even yourself) am being led up the garden path here. On a recent trip through Europe in my A4, the TMC functionality worked perfectly with my RNS-E and current DVD map. I'm under the impression that the lack of TMC functionality in my A4 here in the UK is infact down to the licensing agreement between the TMC broadcaster and AudiUK. As I have mentioned before, the cost of this Navigation unit is not insignificant, and as a "premium" car manufacturer, the current state of affairs does not inspire confidence in your brand. I will be due for a replacement vehicle in the next 6 months, and as things stand, my confidence in other "premium" car manufacturers is increasing by the day.

Regards,

I am sure it all just comes down to software. It look slike my UK system is already capable of dealing with TMC given that it features in the engineering pages

i wonder what you have to do to hack the system - is there a licence code or something you could put in via VAG COM - i cant imagine the dealer will do much more than this if they are planning to enable it for non TMC DVDs

Food for thought

The RNS-E is not offered with TMC in any market that would require a subscription (UK and US would be such markets). Therefore I don't think that the subscription code is in the software yet.

Besides that, Audi and the TMC provider would agree on a subscriber ID that is hard coded in the software and allows the use of TMC for a certain period of time. Once the period is over you would need to buy a new DVD with a new hard coded subscriber ID as part of a software update.
