Quick! Is the radio code required when upgrading software?

If it's installed in a car with proper CAN connection no, if you do it outside the car or with a CAN adapter then yes.

If you have an A3, A4 B6/B7 or A6 C5 2002+ then the RNS-E remembers the VIN from the ECU/cluster and won't prompt you for a code. If you have installed the RNS-E in a A4 B5 or A6 C5 pre 2002 facelift then the RNS-E may prompt you for the code.

Aha! I have a B6 A4, so I should be good then.

So does that mean if I ever disconnect it from the battery (B6 S4) and then put it back, the RNS-E won't prompt me for the code since it has already memorized my car?

Is it realy necessary to first upgrade to 0020 and then to 0110? Cant i just take the newest US software and do an direct upgrade? I also heard from someone that i just could insert the newest us dvd to upgrade the navigation unit... he told me i dont need to modify something. I have already read your 7 Pages thread AudiA4B6US but i think im just too stupid to understand this

It all depends what you currently have and where you want to get. Fact is that the US DVD (any version) does not work with the Euro software and vice versa. If you want to use a unit from one region with maps from the other region you have to modify the DVD or load patched software. When done right the result will be a virtually identical device, except for the buttons. But there are many ways to do the patch, and it also depends on from which point you start (reads: what the current software version is on your unit before you start patching it).
