I did few a4 installs but yesterday I worked on A6 and need some confirmation from someone who did it before...

Car is 2001 A6 with Bose (Symphony I). I installed NAV and recoded VAG.
I connected V-Signal from cluster (blue connector) which probably wasn't necessary.

NAV is working but no GALA is retrieved so I guess I need to connect gray connector (CAN_H & CAN-L) with CAN on RNS-E.

Now ....do I need to keep V-signal once CANs are connected? One of install DIYs says that for Symphony I CANs need to be connected but there is nothing about V-signal.

just want to confirm before I go back to this install,
thanks for any advice ;)

All A6 C5 need the v-wire connected to the instrument cluster. In the A6, CAN-high/-low are only used for the other signals and communication back to the DIS.

Actually, since this is a 2001 A6 C5 (like mine), the GALA signal is available in the connector going to the Symphony I radio. I forget the exact pin, but it is listed on the Symphony I connector label. So with the correct adapter you have the GALA signal. My adapter was missing the wire, and I had to have the vendor send me a loose wire to install in the adapter.

You do have to run the two CAN wires to the cluster.

Incidently, I think I sent you a PM some month ago with a correction to your great list of install differences between the different models. Namely, 2000/2001 A6 C5 have the GALA wire, but you have to pick up the CAN signals from the cluster. Different from 2002+ models.

ok ....I wired CANs but looks like V-signal wire can't be connected in the same time. It locks NAV if it's connected. While disconnected it works perfect

One more thing tho...can anyone confirm working multifunction steering wheel in 2001 A6? For some reason I can't adjust volume from steering wheel.

The multifunction steering wheel controls do not work on the 2001 A6 after installing the RNS-E. The reason is that the steering wheel controller does not speak CAN, it uses CLK/DATA to communicate to the Symphony I.

You can install a controller from a 2002+ A6 and do some simple rewiring of the CAN connections to make it work. I looked into it quite a while back, when I installed the RNS-E, but I was not able to source the controller 4B0 907 487 F at the time. Now I have not had the time to get back to it.

I have both CAN and V-signal hooked up, and it works perfectly. Are you connecting the V-signal to the GALA in the old Symphony I connector ?

Alex,
if you only read my lengthy post for the C5 community....you'd have these answers.  Have you tried the search function before??

I 100% agree with Bjarne. I am actually looking more closely at my plug/play adaptor (non-bose, w/CD changer; with Telephone) from Lanny to make sure the wiring for GALA and CAN H/L (via 20 pin connector) are in the right place. I anticipate that I'll need to modify the plug/play harness a bit as I have a 2001 A6. Probably just 1-3 wires...no biggie.
