Problems since my retrofit Help!

I have a few little problems i need some help with.

The cable i got from Kufatec says A4 8E, my car is an A3 8P

Problem 1

RNS-E doesnt switch off/on when i turn of ignition, have to do it manually.

Problem 2

Doesn't sound like my SUB is working.

Problem 3

DIS shows temp and >NE< when in mp3 or radio mode, shows temp and directions when in nav mode.

Just wondering if the cable is wired the wrong way and maybe my DIS needs codeing...?

Any help would be apprisiated

The A3 8P and the A4 8E B6/B7 units are virtually the same, at least in regards to the RNS-E. So your apdater should be fine if you have a an A3 8P and got an A4 8E adapter.

Problem 1: Did you confirm that the unit is coded for an A3? If yes, did you do a reset (saving 1 in adaptaton 111 or pressing RADIO and SETUP until unit reboots)? If both didn't help, does the unit illuminate if you turn on the lights?

Problem 2: Do you have the standard sound system and not Bose because the adapter looks like it's for a non-Bose system. And is the unit coded for non-Bose?

Problem 3: If you are in NAVI mode and go to SETUP, is Show Compass checked? If it is checked it will show NE in the middle part of the DIS even if you are not navigating. Turn Compass off and you will see the temp moving to the middle section of the DIS.

I was told it would work ok, Tried the reset RADIO and SETUP until unit reboots, stil the same, i turn on lights the map scrren dimms and the illumination comes on.

Dont Know if the unit is coded for non bose, how do i find out? i have the standard system with the built in sub in the boot, have used the fader and balance and all speekers seam to work including sub, but just sounds different to the standard concert unit.

Yes i get this if i turn compas off but get no info on radio station or mp3 what ever setting i have.

So main issue is the not switching on/off with igition and the DIS display

Sounds very much like a coding issue. What area are you in. i would be happy to have a look for you and do any coding required.
I hate to say this, but when I put an A4 unit into an A3, the same symptoms appeared, lights worked ok, but no DIS or ignition.

So 2 things spring to mind.....

1. It's coded incorrectly
2. It's an A4 unit in an A3 body ( I hope not ) VAG will tell you.

Craig
Craig if its an a4 unit in an a3 case. Should it start to work if coded correctly? or are there fundamentel differences?
We had similar here where some tried to put an A4 unit in an A4 Cabriolet (or vice vers, I forgot). Using the correct coding solved the issues he saw...

Im in Middlesbrough..

What codeing will need to be done...? Value's Etc

Is there anyway of telling from the engineer menu if its an A4 unit..?

This is what i get with everything off

Radio or MP3 on

Calculating Route

On Route

Never see the radio staion or MP3 track in the display

Have had the unit out today and check the adapter wireing and all seems to be correct.

Have you recoded the unit yet using VAG-COM

have a look at this link
http://www.navplus.us/forum/viewtopic.php?t=73

You may need to check that the cluster is coded correctly
I dont have access to VAG.Com

Also when i put in a route, im not getting and directions as if the car isnt moving.
Again, same thing with the A4 unit in an A3, no navigation.

you really need to VAG the RNS-E to check it's an A3 one and that it's coding is correct.

I'm in Manchester, is that too far for you to travel for a bit of troubleshooting?
Just been speaking to the guy i got it off via ebay, he says coding or needs new s/ware version because its in a 2005 car...??

He has offered a new unit and s/ware if the coding doesnt solve the problem.

He got me to check the nav info in engineering mode, put car in reverse to see if the display changed which it did, but when i drive the car don't get any speed pulse..??? Also what does the (Off Road) signify?
Of road would inicate that the car is lost and cant locate its position. Where have you located the GPS aerial.
I have to say every unit I have tried out the box has worked in the car it's designed for without changing the coding, only changing BOSE, CD, TV etc was neccessary. Nav always worked ok with the correct signals.

Thats what is making me suspicious of the coding/unit type.

I've also seen it in an A3 when the unit was set to an A4 or A6, it behaved strangely.
If you can't get a VAG-COM, maybe you can get your dealer to check the coding of the RNS-E. Their VAS should show all they need to know but just in case, here are the codings I would set (taken from Sebastian's excellent pages at en.openobd.org:

Select 56 (Radio System) Coding -> Function 07

0205111: Model

0?xxxxx: 2 - Audi A3 (8P)
0x?xxxx: 0 - Malfunction diagnosis for front loudspeakers active
0xx?xxx: 5 - Audi A3 (8P)
0xxx?xx: 1 - No Telephone (Remote Feed Voltage for Microphone active)
0xxxx?x: 1 - No additional Tuner
0xxxxx?: 1 - No TV-Tuner, CD-Changer or Multi-Function Steering Wheel

Also, the long coding in #19 should be checked to confirm the correct coding:

Select 19 (CAN-Gateway) Long Coding -> Function 07

Byte 03 Bit 1 Sound System (Address 47)
Byte 03 Bit 3 Navigation (Address 37)
Byte 03 Bit 4 TV-Tuner (Address 57)
Byte 03 Bit 5 Digital Radio (Address 0F)
Byte 03 Bit 6 Radio (Adress 56)
Byte 03 Bit 7 Telephone (Address 77)

Its funny you say this the guy says he tests every unit in his A4 before shipping...?
took mine to the dealer to recode from A4 Cab to A4 and it solved all my problems which were very similar - took them less than a hour

Hope it is just codeing, I'm a bit Pi**ed off i spent all that time and effort doing the guide fitting it all and it doesnt work right..But at leaset i get lots of help from this community for free...

Had it booked in to the dealer for tmrw, then got a call this afternoon from them to say they didnt want to touch it as it wasnt factory installed, and if anything went wrong on the car realating to electronics they wouldnt honner the warranty...

Next thing is since i had the glove box out last night to run the gps cables i have an airbag fault light on my dash...checked all the cables tonight and all plugged in...so either way looks like i need to et it VAG-COMED..
I printed out the pages on how to VAG the car (http://audi.ogdenlabs.com/vagcom.htm) amended the codes and told the dealer to follow the instructions and they were fine

As far as i understand it, they are not changing the coding in the car (correct me if i'm wrong) but rather they are changing the coding within your navigation unit so there is nothing to break on the car. In my experience the service guys new less than me so you just need to explain it in the correct terms.

There is a list on that site with people who have a VAGCOM unit so you could try using that if they won't do it for you. I got my sales guy to speak to the service department and they were more than happy to sort it for me
