Has anyone ever tried to upgrade the hard drive on the PhatNoise? I got one today but it has to go back because they gave me the VW unit not the Audi. I did take the liberty of opening the cartridge though and it's just a standard 2.5" hard drive.

Soooooo now I'm curious if the drive can just be swapped. I know it uses a fat32 file system but I can't open everything up or they wont return it. If someone has a different hard drive kicking around it would be interesting to know.

David,
that's odd. The VW and Audi versions should operate identically...just a different connector cable in the trunk.

To answer your question, this topic has come up a few times before on the phatnoise forum. Do a search...I don't think anyone was successful in swapping in a larger HD in the DMS.

If it's a standard hard drive, yuo can connect it to a computer and use some imaging tool to copy the contents to a bigger drive. Tools like PowerQuestion DriveCenter, Symantec Ghost and similar can copy the contents from a smaller driver to a bigger drive without loosing the data. All you need is a wat to connect both disks to the same computer.

If there is no OS or bootloader on those disks it's even easier. Just format the drive and connect it. But it might not be that easy...

I know the only difference is the cable but the part is definitely VW. I don't want to mess the part's guy up by getting him to switch boxes and so forth around. Since I can't use it until I get the cable no use doing anything with it. That and I noticed some sort of add in the box that expired Dec 2003 so I figure I'll get a unit that’s newer this way.

As far as the disk imaging goes, I do have a program called Casper that works great for imaging. I also have USB adapters and IDE adapters for 2.5 drives. I may give this a shot. Since PhatNoise offers an 80 gig cartridge it must be just a larger drive.

I figure one of 2 things, either there is an OS or operating instructions on the drive that make it work in the main unit or there is some sort of EPROM that controls the type of hard drive which I figure is less likely.

Oh boy.. Another project.

This has been discussed at length in the Phatnoise forum. The general consensus is that Phatnoise hard drives either have custom firmware, or the Phatbox is somehow tied to these specific drives. People have had no luck swapping out these drives.

I can confirm it's down to the firmware that Phatnoise put on the drives. You cannot upgrade to a bigger disk simply by swapping it in the caddy.

Yes it works just like it does with the NAV+, you just need the correct wiring loom.
