Excellent forum all! I'm new to this one, though I have bounced around most of the others!

I'm just ripping out my RNS-D and replacing with an RNS-E (quite a change from what my car originally had - a single DIN Concert II!!).

The RNS-E unit I've got is 8E0 035 192C so its an A4 EU unit which is great as I'm in the UK. My car is an 2004 A4 Cabriolet 1.8T.

The way I understand it from other posts and the quicklinks, the RNS-E will pick up the reverse, illumination and speed signal all over the CAN-BUS (I had to add these three signal wires manually for my old RNS-D so thats a result - the speed signal wire I installed for the RNS-D came from the ABS) - and I have suitable adaptor looms coming from Kufatec for the original Concert wiring, and to adapt the gps/diversity plugs etc.

So - it should pretty much plug and play. \:D/

My main question though is --- I don't have VAG-COM - when I installed the RNS-D, I was able to set the speed pulse information myself from the navi screen itself in a hidden menu. I had to do this because I ended up having to use the ABS speed signal for some reason and also the tyre info had to be changed. I have lived without the nav info in the DIS, and the radio info just continued to work just like my old Concert. Am I going to HAVE to use VAG-COM to set the tyre size?

Cheers all!

The tire size shouldn'tbe the problem, the RNS-E will adjust itself after a while. the bigger issue will be that a 8E0 unit does not work in a A4 Cabrio unless it gets coded for an A4 cabrio. If you don't have a VAG-COM you could see your dealer and ask him if makes the changes.

Thanks for the reply!

Yes on searching some more, I've seen a post about that same issue - looks like I'd better just get the VAG-COM and be done with it - I guess I can always flog it on eBay afterwards!!

Looking at the quick links, it just looks like I need to set::::

STG 17 (Instrument cluster) -> Adaptation -> Function 10 -> Channel 62
to 04 for Navigation (to get my DIS working)

..and then..

STG 56 (Navigation System) -> Coding -> Function 07
to 4 - Audi A4 Cabriolet (> 2004)

..and then...

STG 56 -> Adaptation -> Function 10 -> Channel 001 (Tires)
to whatever my tires are.

Cool! :D

Cheers!

I would say that if you already have an RNS-D, you don't need to do the instruments.

And it's +04, not set to 04

STG 17 (Instrument cluster) -> Adaptation -> Function 10 -> Channel 62
to 04 for Navigation (to get my DIS working)

+1 Radio
+2 Telephone
+4 Navi
+16 cant remember

I never got around to actually setting my DIS up to accept nav info with my old RNS-D so I will probably have to set it up - my car still thinks I have a Chorus II in there. The dealership guy who sold me the car certainly did a double take when he saw it when I bumped into him in town!!

I'll let you know how the vagging goes - I guess the rule of thumb is to make a note of the original state of the VAG setting before you change them so that if it goes t!ts up you can change it back! :p

Before I do anything I have to wait for some adaptors to turn up from Kufatec I ordered yesterday - judging by some of the posts I've seen I could be waiting some time....

OK - so the VAG-COM turned up today. Still no joy from Kufatec. It would be quicker to fly to Germany and pick those leads up, judging by the standard of their customer service. :?

Anyhow - now I have the VAG, I thought it may be nice to finally get Nav info in the DIS. I connected to the 17-Instruments module, and had a look at Channel 62, expecting it to be "1" in line with me only ever having a radio in the past. It was "17"!!!

Craigyb - I guess I must have the:

+16 cant remember
I ended up changing the number to 21, thinking that 16+1+4=21. This appears to work (after turning the ignition off and on again). I guess the +16 must be something to do with the cabriolet - maybe for the "Can't Use Roof" warnings when you try to lower the roof at over 5mph.

So that was cool. 8)

I have a new question - I also tried to have a look at modules 37-Navigation and 56-Radio to give me a bit of practise for setting up my RNS-E when it goes in.

I cannot connect to either module!! When I try to connect, VAG-COM tries three times, then comes up with a error box saying "No Response from Controller!". How can this be?!

My TMC box is from an A6... could it be that this is the problem? But then why would the instrument cluster work so perfectly??! If this is still the case when my RNS-E goes in, I will be not able to change my nav system to work in my Cab - and I won't be able to set up my tyres! Boo! #-o

I think I answered this with more intense searching on this forum. :wink:

My RNS-D loom is bound not to have its K-Line connected - so I'd just better check my RNS-E loom does when it turns up.

I thought my Navi used CAN to communicate with VAG-COM but apparently not - its the K Line.

My 2004 S4 Avant also had 17 in Channel 62, so I had to change it to 21 also.
