new RNS-E owner questions

2045 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  himnbandit
I just installed my RNS-E this last week and have come up with some questions after a week of use.

-is it possible to zoom in WHILE you are on a navigation route
(I know you can zoom in and out using the secondary control panel but it doesnt stay with you while you move)

-is it normal for the gps to take 30-60 seconds to start working once you start the car?

-is the EU and US voice the same and is there a way to change the voice?

-has anyone had any problems with specific brands/sizes of SD cards?

-is the cd-changer not compatible" if it only displays the first cd when it is really full or is there a way to fix this

THANKS

The scale automatically zooms in at junctions - I don't know a way to fix it. Someone else might?

Yes - all GPS systems take in the region of 45 seconds to re-find the satellite signals. The RNS-E uses its built-in gyro and dead reckoning until the GPS gets a fix.

AFAIK they are different voices. On the EU units you can choose the language from a built-in list. BTW I'd love to be able to change the voice to create a sat nav with "attitude" - when you ignore the instructions (because you know a better route) I'd love to make it "express displeasure" at you!

There's been several discussions on SD cards over the last few months. People using non high speed or MLC cards have had problems sometimes - I always check with the manufacturer and only use hi-speed cards and I've never had a problem.

There's a list of compatible CD players (many are not compatible) in the Multimedia section (I think), see also the post from yargnat about when to load CDs.

I just turn the big dial counter clockwise to zoom in and clockwise to zoom out. It rembers the last selection even after powering off. I don't use the auto intersection zoom though, just the intersection map

I'm parking in a 6 floor garage, on the 6th floor in most cases, in downtown Chicago between all the highrisers. My unit (EU or US, doesn't matter) gets totally confused when I leave the garage (turning 360 degree without GPS is no fun for any navi) and it sometimes takes 5 minutes of so before it know where it is and which direction I drive. But PetrolDave is right, after a minute of so under open sky it should have found enough satelites for the position (3-4 are required I think)

The English voice is not the same in the US/Europe but the voice data is on the DVD, not part of the software. if you ever used a Euro unit with the Euro DVD (or vice versa) you whill hear the difference. There is not documented way to change the voice.

Where and have you confirmed that one works?
Why not get a 1GB Kingston SD Elite Pro (which would be much faster) for $55 after $10 mail in rebate through 8/20/05?
