New Install Questions

Hi

I have just installed a Euro RNS-E in my UK B7 Avant but have not VAGCOM'ed it yet. I have a basic system with no bose, no cd changer, no telephone and no DIS

I have a few problems though which i am hoping will be solved by VAGCOM:

* I have no sound coming out of the rear speakers - i'm pretty sure this isn't a wiring issue

* The system does not turn off automatically when i remove the keys from the ignition

* The dashboard display does not display the radio channel or any nav info (I don't have DIS and it used to display the radio when Symphony was connected)

* The sat nav is a bit slow to realise i am moving but otherwise works fine

Additionally the wiring loom supplied with RNS-E had the Telephone Mute wired to the Alarm Ground on the car so i disconnected the tel mute as this was causing the sound to cut out and the unit to function erratically!

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated. Can any of these issues be solved in Engineering Mode?

Thanks

Make sure your RNS-E adapter has the rear line out wired (Connector C). If you order a non-Bose adapter and do not specify that you have an active rear system you may get 4 speaker channels wired but no rear line-out.

make sure that CAN-high/-low is wired correctly. The CAn wires can be found in the power connector D

Would also indicate that CAN-high/-low is messed up. You should at least see the radio info even without making the VAG-COM changes.

Again, in the A4 B6/B7 and A3 8P this points to a CAN issue, in the A6 C5 this would indicate that the v-pin (speed wires) is not connected properly.

Don't know where you got your adapter from but are you sure that it was configured for your car? All those issues shouldn't happen with a properly configured RNS-E adapter, at least not in a B7.

Thanks for your help - i will check those points today

Ok

i've sorted the speaker problem - turns out the line out was wired for the front speakers and not the rear so i've swapped the connectors around and they now work

I've also wired up the alarm ground and the K-line which were not connected and the supplied adapter :( I think i will buy a new connector as its starting to look a mess!

I've triple checked the CAN and this is wired correctly but still don't get the radio on the dash display and the unit won't turn off by the key - it does however illuminate and the nav switches to night when i turn the lights on so i am thinking this is a VAGCOM issue?

I can't get the unit to go to Engineering mode - i've tried pressing Nav the top left cursor (5secs) right curser (5secs) - are the cursors the buttons around the main dial or the cd changer controls at the top?

Thanks

Glad you fixed your speaker and k-line issue. If the nav goes into night mode when you turn on the lights then CAN is wired correctly. But then the nav should also turn off when removing the ignition key. How about the position when you are driving? Does it get updated more frequently now?

As far as I know, the coding for radio is +1 and for nav is +4. Your instrument cluster was coded for a radio before and at least the radio info should still be displayed. What is the part number of the EU RNS-E you got?

You can try to reset the unit (press RADIO + SETUP until it reboots), this as help a few times in the past. But I'm afraid the next steps would be to get a VAG-COM and check if there are any errors left (after clear all the existing errors which were stored during the install).
Hi

The Model No is 8H0 035 192 H44

I tried the reset but it made no difference so i think i'll have to find someone with VAGCOM

Thanks
The 8H0 035 192 is for the A4 Cabriolet (8H), not the Sedan/Avant (8E). I have heard from people who installed the 8E0 unit in their 8H but not the other way around. It might be that the 8H0 unit really works only with the Cabriolet. Just guessing right now because what you get makes no sense. If illumination is working, power off/on should be working as well.
Thanks - I'll see what the VAGCOM brings up

Did you have to wire the can connection yourself, or did you previously have a Concert or Symphony?

This sounds very strange if you had an Audi HU previously, and that worked properly.
Previously had a Symphony 2 installed - I haven't changed the wiring on CAN - its as per the Symphony 2

As an aside - Any idea which pins the "COM" and "Switch Symbol" (the middle row on the LINE OUT on the Symphony 2 diagram) go to on the RNS-E? On mine they go to LINE OUT GND (C8) and U14R (D16) - just want to check these are correct

Thanks
COM is the common ground for line out, the switch is the remote wire for the external amp (Bose or non-Bose)
since i've connected the alarm GND and K-line the central locking seems to packup intermittantly - solved by unlocking the drivers door with the key, starting the engine and using the door mounted lock buttons to lock and unlock the car - would this be related to the alarm GND?
also - do you think my CAN problems could be because i don't have DIS - i see in another post reference to CAN Comfort?
I think ( not 100% sure ) that only comfort-can is activated when u have NO DIS. ( no grey connector, nowhere to get the can from :( )
I wonder why i get illumination then?

Jake
Since you have a B7, you should have the can gateway also. Try locating the gateway (propably somewhere behind the steering wheel area) and connect the can directly from there.
Where in the UK are you.I have Vagcom but am up North
:p
Hi

I'm in suffolk so not just down the road! Thanks for your help though

Another symptom i having is that the radio powers down after approx half an hour even when the car is running - presuming its going to standby

This is a typical effect of messed up CAN wires. I would recommend to double check the wiring of CAN high and CAN low.
