I just replaced my symphony II w/ Bose with a RSN-E unit. I am getting very poor quality on my rear speakers and sub-woofer. I'm fairly sure I have the correct Symphony II w/Bose adapter to the RSN-E. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should check. From the forum I read that the quality should be just as good or better with the RSN-E.

Thanks.

Never check if it makes a difference but did you check the sound characteristics settings with VAG-COM:

STG 56 - Function 07

0xx?xxx: Sound Characteristic

0 - linear Sound Characteristic
1 - Audi A4 (8E)
2 - Audi A6 (4B)
3 - Audi A4 Cabriolet (8H)
4 - Audi TT (8N)
5 - Audi A3 (8P)
9 - Bose Sound System

http://en.openobd.org/audi/rns.htm#56_rnse

Since you have some sound from the rear I would guess the magic Bose pin is connected correctly.

There is one thing though which migh make a difference. There was a TSB to disable the AudioPilot. I had this done and lost lots of Bass volume so I went back and re-enabled the AudioPilot (and live with the automatic up/down feature on noisy roads or when hot).

My VAG shows the following code. I assume this is correct..0309135

I'll try the autopilot first thing tomorrow. Where is this disabled/re-enabled as I am still getting myself familar with the interface.

One more thing, when I vag my instrument cluster the default is 17 do I add +4 for 21. Or take the radio setting at +1 and Nav setting +4 which equals 5

Thanks for your help.

You cannot easily turn the AudioPilot on/off if the dealer hasn't done the TSB. But without the TSB there is no reason why the RNS-E should sound worse than the Symphony.

If you cluster is 17 now, add 4 for the Navi, which makes 21. Some had problems getting the Navi displayed with 21, but 5 worked for them. Just remember, if you have an A4 B6 with red DIS, you have to turn the Navi off/off while being in route guidance to the the Navi on the DIS.

Can you describe what you mean by "poor quality"?

When I fade to the front speakers they sound great. Great bass response and highs. When I fade to the back speakers with the sub-woofer, the sound is very low and muffeled. Maybe this is a design feature of the bose system, but my sound quality overall has really gone down since the removal of my Symphony II system.

"Very low and muffled" - sounds like there may be a problem with your adapter or your RNS-E.

It's certanly not a design feature of the Bose system. With Bose both the Symphony II and the RNS-E provide line level signals to the Bose amplifier in the rear.

Try putting your Symphony II back in - just to prove the Bose amplifier and speakers are still OK. If that sounds OK, then check the connections in your adapter for the line level outputs plus the ground and switched 12V to the amplifier. If they are good, then you may have a faulty RNS-E.

i just installed an RNS-E into an '03 A4 5spd w/ Red DIS last night.. the cluster coding was 17, i changed it to 21 and it didnt work (even when in route guidance and turning the RNS-E on/off).. i changed it to 5, still didnt work.. :x

i changed it to 16, this removed the radio as it should -- well at least some recoding is working.. i changed it back to 21 and cycled the power on the RNS-E several times, still nothing.. so we gave up and the guy drove home..

on his way home, it magically started working..

definitely some issues with all red DIS -- i guess we will all have to follow AudiA4B6US's example and upgrade to the color DIS

FIXED..... I pulled out the unit and one of the pins from the Bose harness came loose. After a quick reset and re-install sound is back to normal. I guess I should've looked at that first. Thanks for your help.

Not just red DIS but also some color DIS. It is something that happens at random to any DIS. I've had a few color DIS cars where we just let it sit for a half an hour and then magically it appeared - no rhyme or reason. :?
