I realize this is a forum for info mainly on the Audi navigation systems but I have a question for which someone here may have some knowledge.

On the VW Touareg, the navigation system, MFD2, uses NAVTEQ CDs which use Detailed City coverage. Many people including myself find that large areas of coverage are missing from these maps. Much of Vermont and New Hampshire, and many other places outside of major cities.

I have been in contact with NAVTEQ about this and they tell me that until Bosch/Blaupunkt allows them to compile CDs with Full Coverage data or they convert the areas in question to Detailed City coverage, I won't see these areas on my navigation.

So my question is; does anyone know how to compile CDs or add data to CDs? ie. can I buy a CD that has the Full Coverage data and compile it into a CD that can be read by my MFD2 system?

My second question relates to the nav system itself and whether there is any way to recode it so more detail and POIs show up on the screen. At this time, no resturants show on the screen even when you turn on resturant POIs. But the resturant data is on the map. So my assumption is that the software on the CD tells the nav system how much detail should be displayed and there must be some way to crack this software and modify it.

Wow, I have more posts that Spockcat! I feel so priveledged! :)

I looked heavily at the Touaregs before making the plunge on the allroad. Sorry I don't have any input on your question here...but I just couldn't resist. :lol:

Have you any experience with the DVD based nav in the Treg? My experience with my RNS-E compared to my limited toying with the CD based nav at the dealership is that the Audi is much better. I hope the DVD based Treg nav caught up.

As far as I can tell, the DVD version of the system is nothing more than swapping the CD drive with a DVD drive. In fact, the DVD system is WORSE in some ways than the CD system because VW has coded out the video input and the second audio input. I assume that we will eventually find the coding to free it up but so far we haven't.

This is normal

I live in Kansas City, and even our Lexus, and Acura Navigation systems do not have ANY detail other than major highways/ interstates out of metro areas. Even the capital city of Kansas (Topeka if you know the capitals) does not have any street details or anything. It seems to me if your city / metro area does not have 800K+ of population, there is little to no chance that any navigation system will have the data - regardless of which source company they get their maps from.

the difference between touareg and audi may be in the param.sys file. if you look at [1210] it has a nomap_enbl=true line which doesn't appear in [605] audi nav+(maybe this line turns off some map features in the touareg). this is just speculation but they may be many variables that turn features on/off , if you look at the mercedes [27225] it has IND_AREA_DISPL = FALSE, which could mean industrial area display (this could be POI's). what you can do is modify [1210] to look like [605] and add IND_AREA_DISPL = TRUE so it would look like this.

[1210] # VW Colorado (Touareg)
SWProduct = navusa_m
BDATA_PREFIX = !~
IND_AREA_DISPL = TRUE

of course you do this at your own risk, no one knows what would happen if you turn on certain variables that was turned off by default.

original param.sys reference

[605] # AUDI_2DIN, VW_2DIN
SWProduct = navusa_m
BDATA_PREFIX = !~

[1210] # VW Colorado (Touareg)
SWProduct = navusa_m
NOMAP_ENBL = TRUE
BDATA_PREFIX = !~

[27225] # COMAND_2_0
SWProduct = navusa_m
IND_AREA_DISPL = FALSE
TMC_IN_RL_PREFIX = TMC~

Thanks for the reply. The map CD I am currently using (a 2005 MB map CD) has this param.sys file:

NOMAP_ENBL = TRUE
BDATA_PREFIX = !~

#[1320] # TP170 Ford
