So i was wondering if anyone has tried to install a modified xbox (the ones with the hard drives) into the rns-e. The reason im asking is because i don't fully understand the way the disc interacts with the unit, but if its just a software program, it could be easily downloaded onto the xbox, and would no longer neccesitate the disc to always be in the dvd drice of the unit.
Obviously this question applies to anyone with any hard drive system wired to the car.
Any thoughts?

Xbox OS is based on Win version while RNS-E operates on firmware to controll mechanical and software part. Those 2 are not compareable at all anless you will rewrite RNS-E interface to use it on Xbox.

Pointless and very time consuming in my opinion [-(

damn, ur right Proxus. The only thing im still trying to figure out, is if i can somehow configure the disc drive of the xbox to act as a secondary dvd input to the rnse and just leave the disc in the xbox, and run it when i need to by having the disc bypass the xbox and run directly into the rnse unit
does that make sense to anyone?

its not so much that i havn't searched the forum (i have looked at most of it) but more that i have no freaking idea what anyone is talking about. all i hear is the 1218 might bypass the 158 witha split watage decoy, but the continum transister module won't receive the proper 297 pathogen format. lol
Whatever, i guess this site is a little too much for the likes of me.
Thanks for the help.

Did you click on Installation Guide?
Few weeks ago I knew nothing about those units so believe me it's not that hard :p

main idea behind installation is very easy:

UNIT + ANTENNA + HARNESS + VAG CODES change + DIETZ 1417 (for extra video inputs)

I understand what your saying. It would be an enginering task to make something like that happen. Take the Xbox out of the equation and jsut think of it as a second DVD drive, The only way you could make something like that work is if it had the same format DVD drive and you hot wired it directly inside the RSNE and you put a switch in, to go back and forth.

I'm pretty brave but I would think something like that would cost a furtune and take a lot of R&D.

your probably right, the only reason i was even considering it was because once ive made the modifications to my xbox, i'll probably hide it away someware in the care, and ill never have to put another disc into it because it can store all the xbox games, movies and mp3's etc on it, so it would be easier to just park the nav disc in there and forget about it than to keep taking it in and out of the actuall unit.

it would be convenient, but its probably not worth the money

Do you know that you have 2 SD slots? Why to bother with removing your Map DVD all the time? I don't know where you drive but I have 2x 2Gb SD cards which gives me about 2000-2500 songs \:D/

I could drive across the states and not hear the same song twice

Why would you want to take the nav disk out all the time? While you can play MP3 and audio CDs in the internal DVD drive, it's main purpose is to read the navi DVD. For MP3 you have 2 SD-card slots, confirmed working with 2GB SD-cards each. For more music you have the option of connecting a glovebox CD-changer, a Phatnoise, or an iPod besides sat radio (not all together at the same time though). I don't know much about the xbox but don't you have to have it somewhere accessible because you have no remote control to play MP3 or movies.

The music is all on my xbox anyway, im just not planning on getting a disc changer, so i would only use the dvd drive for cd's that i buy/ movies. But like i said its not a big deal. But since u mention the SD cards, any chance i can store the nave disc on one of them, and leave that in the unit?
PS i'll post the xbox (hopefully success story) in about a month for anyone whose interested

i have wireless controllers for the xbox, and when its modified u don't need the remote any more, id probably put it under one of the seats

and like i said, my main use of the dvd drive would be for dvd's.

Forget the xbox as anything except a media player, forget the SD cards 1G as anything but music holding devices. If you wnat navigation the disk stays in the RNS-E, end of story.

It's nice thought that all of these things would be somehow compatible, but this aint startrek and we cant just interlink stuff via the plasma conduit. In the real world electronics is very rarely compatible between different manufacturers.

Use your xbox as a media player into the RNS-E, yes ,but you will need some sort of video input adaptor such as the Dietz.
