Navi Plus "locking up" with certain functions - help

1850 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Teutonic_Tamer
First post - so be nice

My Navi Plus unit seizes up sometimes. The most common is when you enter a destination, select from the "City" screen, and then select "Town Centre". The unit won't respond to any further inputs (you can't alter radio or CD volume, can't change radio station, etc, etc). I have to turn off the whole radio/Navi unit for about 10 mins, before I can re-use it! :x

Anyone got any clues or answers???

Thanx

sounds like the CD-reader is getting hung up. I would check the map disk for any scratches etc. Try to insert a different map disk and see what happens.

Hopefully, the laser doesn't need an alignment...as that would suck. Not sure if Blaupunkt would fix (that is the case in the US)....as it's an Audi part.

Keep us posted.

I've already tried changing discs - I obviously use my UK disc when I am the UK, but when I went to France, I ordered the France disc, and the Navi unit gave the same probs - so I don't think it is the CDs.

It also locks up sometimes when you are not using the Navi at all - just listening to the radio or CD (changer) - sometimes you can't alter the volume, or change radio presets. If you turn off the unit, then turn it back on straight away, the problem remains. You have to turn it off for about ten minutes, before the jam will clear.

I have noticed the screen get very hot sometimes, and I can hear a fan working somewhere inside the Navi unit (when the engine and everything else is turned off). Could that be a prob - has anyone else had probs with overheating?

What's that mean then :?:  The car is still in warranty (UK), but two separate stealers can't/won't fix it

sean,
I would try to disconnect the unit from all of it's wiring harnesses. Make sure you have the 4 digit code. Maybe that will reset something.

Give it a shot.

PS: Yes, the fan will run with the ignition turned off. Sometimes, on long trips, the LCD gets hot...so I switch the display off and rely on the info in the instrument cluster for nav, radio info.

Find another (better) dealer.

When the OE fited TV tuner on my original CD Nav+ wouldn't remember it's settings, I went back to my dealer (Audi Camberley, used to be Whites Camberley) and, yes it took several visits but that was because Audi UK didn't want to believe me - a fully qualified electronics engineer - but instead had to see the results of their diagnostic tools - and they wasted their money changing the RNS-D but eventually they changed the TV tuner and all was well.

Anyway the key point is the dealer believed me and put pressure on Audi UK to fix it under warranty. :)
Oh, sincerest apologies for dragging up an old thread, but I've just noticed I failed to post any updates.

So, just in case anyone else is searching for answers to similar probs, here goes.

The problems detailed in the original post were soley down to the software on the 2003 discs. Both the OEM UK, and the TeleAtlas France 2003 discs both produced identical problems. However, after three replacement head units, it was subsequently discovered that the 2003 discs were faulty, so a FOC 2006 UK disc was supplied, and those probs listed were cured.

Hope this helps any future members. :)
