Instrument cluster not displaying directional arrows!?

3595 Views 14 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  PetrolDave
So I recoded my car with the Vag-tool by following directions in the schemantics section however all I am able to display is the track names of songs and radio rds info. I am not however able to see arrows or street names. Is there something I am forgettin to do or do I have something setup wrong. I have run through list of possible issues but have come up blank as to what the problem is. Thanks to those of you who respond with possible solutions. This one has me stumped!

What code did your instrument cluster have 1 or 17? You should have recoded to 5 or 21 respectively.

Arrows are only shown when guidance is active i.e. you have programmed a destination and a route.

If you turn on the compass, then you should see letters like NE, NW in the cluster when there is no active route.
I had the same issue when I tried to code it to 5 or 21. If your original code was 1, use 5. If it was 17, use 21.

Mine didn't work at first either... I tried turning my RNS on/off but nothing. I went back to work and left the car alone for about 2 hrs. I went back out to check it again and it works fine now.
Mine was 17 and I tried 21 but it didn't display the nav info or radio info at the top. I switched it to 5 and it works fine now.
I have found that after starting the car I have to turn the radio off then on to get the directional arrows in the DIS. Then I can cycle through the DIS displays with the button on the bottom of the wiper stalk.
I have too to turn off/on the RNS-E while navigating to get the navi info on the red DIS. This seems to be a common issue with the bi-color A4 B6 DIS, one of the reasons why Audi never delivered an A4 B6 with RNS-E and bi-color (red) DIS. The multi-color DIS is not supposed to have this issue, nor does the Allroad/A6 DIS. I also had my cluster programmed to 21 but didn't see anything until I locked the car for a couple of hours and then actuvated navigation while the ingition was on.
First off, everyone thanks for the replies. Earlier this afternoon while taking a short drive to ther MB dealer my DIS all of a sudden decided to display the direction and current highway I was traveling on. Really had no idea what did it but it certainly worked. I did not engage the navigation route so this was just on normal route w/o nav. I tried to toggle features with the up/down on the stalk but nothing worked. At that point I turned the DIS off and back on again and it went away. Later tonight on my way out I will attempt to input a destination into the navigation and see if she pops up. If not I will try what you all have suggested. Many thanks for the prompt reply all. :D
It is not the up/down button on the end of the stalk that toggles the navi display. You use the button on the bottom of the stalk that toggles through Trip1, Trip2, Off - this becomes Trip1, Trip2, Navi, Off when it is working properly.
I have a 2006 / A4, 2 color displsy and just returned from a dealer that spend 2 hours trying to get the display going. (He recoded it to 23 because of the (planned) presence of a bluetooth handsfree, this was also suggested in the Kufatec manual)
His manuals did not report anything that there were issues with 2 color display we tried the workarounds swithching on and of and this did not work.
He suggested that there might be a problem with the connector/adapter.

I noticed that some people got the display to work right away, some only with on/off switching of the unit during drip and other not at all. I would be interesting if everyone could specify which cables have been used to see if there's a pattern there.

A few hours later I noticed that it started working as some other explained earlier in this thread. But I do need to switch the RNS-E of and on during driving while navigating to get the displays going.

Still I would be interested to see a pattern.

I just had my dealer try this as well. He re-coded from 17 to 21 and nothing happened. He decided to change it back to 17 to be safe until I could confirm that 21 is in fact the magic number. I have an appointment back up there next Wednesday. I'll have him change it to 21 permanently then.
Mine was coded 17 when I installed my EU RNS-E and we coded it to 21. No luck with getting it to work. So reading more and using the vag codes from this page http://audi.ogdenlabs.com/vagcom.htm We coded it to 5 and it started working as soon as the RNS-E was turned off and back on.
I also used the knowledge base & quick links info provided by AudiA4B4US.
I had someone code my display to 21 (it was 17) and I didn't see anything. The next day I was waiting for a friend in my car so I started messing with the nav system and eventually decided to try engineering mode. At that point the display became active and worked, however after I turned the car off and on again it disappeared and I haven't been able to make it come back since.

Anyone seen a pattern? I guess I'll try coding it to 5 at some point and see if that changes anything.
vag codes for RNS-E in red dis

I was talking to the person who coded my car after the Nav install a couple of days ago and he told me he found more info as to why the 21 code didn't work on my car, but the 5 code does.
The 5 is for the red dis and the 21 is for the color dis. I had the red dis at the time and when I install the color dis, I should have to get it coded to 21 to work...I'll soon find out.
Direction Arrows and Compass in red DIS

Hi

I did play around with it and I think I found the pattern.

In order to turn the display on, you have to:

- Set ingnition on or start the engine (RNS-E must be switched off)
- Switch on RNS-E >> Compass will be shown in the DIS
- You can toggle with the Reset button.
- Once you open the door, the compass is gone (sometimes it stays)
- Once it is gone, you can't get it back. Switch off RNS-E and on again.

Conclusion: You need to switch off and on again. And then it works.

This goes also for the direction arrows. They will appear when you activate navigation. (presume the compass wasn't gone).

However, this is strange behavior. Do I miss something in the retrofit procedure? My cluster is adapted to 7 in channel 62 (Infotainment). I have also bluetooth.

Any Ideas, how to get this more stable?

That's normal behaviour for a car with the red DIS. It's due to a bug in the red DIS firmware which Audi have no intention of fixing.

BTW you didn't need to discover this for yourself - it's been posted here in literally hundreds of threads.
