The RNS-E has been around much longer than that, just not in the USA.
Just talking about availablity. In Germany the RNS-E got introduced in spring 2004, almost 2 years ago. Based on the number of Audis sold (and crashed) over there, some could have re-apeared on the market. This would also explain why you can usually not find any used US unit for sale.

All new A3/A4 get their RNS-E units installed in Germany. That would probably explain why there are new units (US and Euro spec) available from Germany and other European countries.

I know several cases where someone got a US spec Audi in Europe and had the need to install a Euro spec RNS-E. The left over US spec RNS-E got sold through various sources. Don't know of any case where a Euro spec Audi would have come to the US and therefore needing a new US spec RNS-E.
Thanks for the replies. I've been following this concept since back when the only resource was the user group over on Yahoo. Just lurking here most of the time.

Essentially then one would be spending $1,500 or better for a electronic unit that is removed from another vehicle (for whatever reason) and has only whatever warranty given by the seller.

By the last part I mean that if you have any issues with the unit you can't get it serviced under the Warranty for the car (like the existing Symphony unit
Correct. But even if you buy a RNS-E from the dealer, you usually get only one year of warranty. After that one year you would need to pay for repairs, even if you car is still under warranty.
Thanks AudiA4B6US that sums up everything nicely.
I often search for RNS-E units on eBay which are available to the UK, and there are always plenty on sale from Poland. Most of these vendors have decent feedback but no PayPal, so it's hard to verify their background. There are also some for sale in Italy but these fetch silly prices.

Does anyone know where the RNS-E is manufactured? It wouldn't surprise me if it's Poland.
Aisin makes the RNS-E as OEM for Audi and they are made in Japan. And for Poland, Audi doesn't even sell cars with the RNS-E in Eastern Europe...

Interesting. Wonder why so many are for sale in Poland? Maybe they "leak" from Ingolstadt ...

I don't think this is correct. If you got a RNS-E fitted with delivery of a new car, it should be covered by the entire warranty, just as every other piece is...
What he was saying was if you go to the dealer's parts counter to buy just the unit then you get a one year parts warranty. It is assumed that if you're shopping around for a RNS-E unit then your car didn't come with one from the factory.
