Hi everyone,

After a few hours of looking around I found where the connectors for the GPS antenna on the roof of the car is located! From the GPS antenna there are 4 cables - 2 split to the left rear (driver-side) for the XM radio box and 2 split to the right rear (passenger side) - unconnected. See photos in the links below. Just pull off the cover in the rear roof line and go to the left corner. I am checking with Ralf Deventer to find the extension cable to connect from there to the front where the Nav unit will be. Running the cable forward should be straight forward and then you shouldn't need to get a GPS antenna. Hopefully this will save a few bucks and should have the best signal (theoretically).

Nice work. If the colors are somewhat consistent, then the blue one should be GPS (because the plug on the RNS-E is blue too). Looks like a Fakra plug, like the one on the RNS-E. The red plug (is this red or purple or violet) should be GSM.

I found this in the Kufatec shop:
- an extension cord Fakra to SMB: http://shop.kufatec.de/popup_image.php/pID/122
- and a picture of the European shark fin http://shop.kufatec.de/popup_image.php/pID/231

It looks like a plain Fakra to Fakra extension cord should work. I agree on the better signal but don't know if it's worth the effort to get the cable routed from the back to the dash board. A new GPS antenna is less than $30 and works fine even behind the instrument cluster.

Don't know

My S4 did not come with Nav and had the sharkfin antenna. I do have XM satellite radio so maybe that's why it has it. Look on the roof of the car to see if you have one.

Not Everywhere

I believe all S4's come with Shark fin but not all A4's.
May be true in the US but not everywhere - my first S4 had a sharkfin because it had a factory fitted RNS-D, but my second one hasn't got a sharkfin beacuse it didn't have any nav (until I fitted an RNS-E). I'm in the UK.

I'm not sure but I think the Sharkin started with recent MY's like 2005.

I have a A4 (2005) and did not order XM or the NAV package but have the fin.

I just checked my A4(2004, Quattro, 1.8T, Premium Pkg). I don't have the a nav system or XM, however I do have a sharkfin and the cable is in the same place that Paul described on the S4.

Has anyone ran a cable from this location to the back of the rns-e system?

I just installed it a few days ago running an extension gps cable from the rear roof to the rns-e and it works great! The cable I got from Ralf Deventer is a little short. I might get another one a little longer. Running the cable forward is a piece of cake and easy to hide. I'll make a post of my installation when I get a chance.

Any idea how long the cable you purchased was? (So that I can order a longer one)

Thanks.

I ordered one of these from Kufatec. It's 6 meters long so hopefully that's enough. It has the Fakra connectors on both ends like it should. Ralf Deventer is great to deal with but he doesn't have the cables with the fakra connectors.

I'll post an update when I get it.

Did you order yet? Would you be interested in going in together to save on shipping?

I ordered 2 sets of the cables. My friend is considering getting the RNS also so if he backs out I may have an extra set. He's going to let me know once I have everything installed if he wants to do it or not. If not I will keep you in mind. It costs 49 euros for shipping from Kufatec! That's why I ordered 2 sets right away. I figure I will be able to sell the extra set to someone here or on ebay.

Thanks,
Paul
