2) Press the NAV button and release.

3) Press the top-left cursor button for 5 seconds and release.

4) Press the top-right cursor button for 5 seconds. Hold until the screen changes.

works on US RNS-E as well

I confirmed that this works on the US RNS-E as well.

Here's a peculiar thing I noticed... After I exited the engineering mode, the RNS-E forgot that I had an SD card in the slot. It showed it as being empty, although it wasn't. I simply had to eject then re-insert it. No biggie, but strange none the less.

Doens't work

Hello on rns-e eu doesn't work.
do you know the right combination to access on the engineer mode on the rns-e eu
These _are_the instructions for the RNS-E EU, as noted by OP. It works for US model also. on my EU model 5 sec is enough as stated above.
I would gues that your pushing the wrong keys, it doesn't mean the << >> Arrow keys, it means the top left and right soft buttons around the dial.
hi there

This procedure does not work in my RNS-E. I am basically trying to find out the serial number of the unit so I can get the code for it as I bought is 2nd hand on ebay with no code. Will the unit go into engineering mode before the pin is entered? Does anyone know if you can recode the unit or get its code (or serial number) any other way. What I think was the serial number label is damaged.

Thanks

There is many people in EU where you can recode/uncode your NAV unit. I don't know about anyone in US tho, and I'm not 100% sure if you can do it in US unless you bought it from dealer.

Thanks for the reply. I live in Scotland, UK but have had no luck at all with getting it recoded. I have tried loads of radio shops and Audi themselves - they wont recode it as I dont own the car it came from - I bought it off eBAy.
You can actually use VAG-COM to see the serial number. I think it was under Advanced ID in VAG-COM once you opened 56 or 37. I have a hard time to get into engineering mode as well. No I simply use VAG-COM to see certain data.
I can confirm this works on the latest EU RNS-E units. There's quite alot of info available from it. Presumably this must be formally documented somewhere by Audi as to what all the options mean. Will post some photos when I work out how to.
Additional info to get into engineering mode

The first time I attempted to get into e-mode it was staight forward. After installing the XM, ME-3 & Dietz 1417 things did not go so well. Here's what I had to do to get things going.

) Turn on RNS-E.

2) Press the NAV button and release.
a) wait 5-10 seconds.

3) Press the top-left cursor button (around dial) for 5 seconds & release.
a) the indicator light stays on to acknowledge it's been long enough.

4) Press the top-right cursor button for 5 seconds. Hold until the screen changes.

It seems that the RNS-e is just like a small PC. The more accessories you add the s l o w e r it goes.

It is true that it takes longer to boot up when you have many things connected, and many songs on your SD cards.

However, you don't have to get into engineering mode directly after startup. You can run through the sequence of buttons at any time the unit is on. Therefore, just wait until it is all booted up (the screen transitions are smooth and fast), then start with pressing the NAV button and continue from there.
I just found this on Motor-Talk.de, might be useful for some  How to get into Engineering Mode (WMV video)

RNS-E in Australia - Engineering mode (Model D, HW72, FW460)

I was not able to get in the engineering mode, when the unit was in English and Southern Hemisphere mode. In German and with 10 set to 0, I was able to get in successfully
I have no issue getting in to engineering mode on mine in a B6 A4. I've also tried it on a few other RNS-Es in Melbourne set on southern hemisphere (all B6 variants though - A4s and S4s).

I take it you're trying it in the S3?
Enigeneering mode

Here are the details of my unit. (Note: I don't have Australian media in the unit yet. Waiting for 13 - soon maybe??)

Control Module Part Number: 8E0 035 192 D
Component and/or Version: RNS-E HIGH EU H72 0460
Software Coding: 0519713

HW: 72

Yes - this i in the S3
