Does RNS-E work properly in B7 without DIS?

3611 Views 25 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  mercury26
Having a lot of problems with CAN on a B7 without DIS. So that i can eliminate the DIS from the enquiry does anyone have an RNS-E working (CAN signal to Nav, Radio appearing on dash, turns off with the key)

I have illumination so i know its wired correctly

Many thanks

What problems are you having? I plan on fitting the RNS-E into my B7 this week so it would be good to know any problems i may experiance.
I've just fitted my new RNS-E into my B7 Avant with out DIS and all seems to be working OK. Illumination, Ignition Sense, and radio station name in Cluster display. Im going to connect the K line up a little later and see if i can enable Navigation display in the cluster aswell via my VAG-COM. Are you still having problems?
I think my problem is to do with having a Cabriolet unit (8H0 not 8E0) which we think is coded to a cab not an A4. Apparently the ignition sense is different on a Cab so i don't get radio displayed on the dash, no CAN sensor on the Nav and it doesn't go off by the key, but i do get illumination.

I'm hoping this will be solved by recoding it to an A4 when i take it to the dealer tomorrow

Thanks for you post

Jake
would be interesting to see if you get navigation on the cluster without DIS - if you do i will get them to code mine in tomorrow!

I have always wondered if DIS could be activated by buying a new column stalk and VAG-COM'ing it as their must be a computer to display miles till empty!

In the B6 all you need is the wiper stalk and some VAG changes. I don't know if this has changed in the B7 though.
i think i shall unleash ebay if thats the case!

Thanks

Here is the original link: http://www.audi4ever.at/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=20883 (sorry, in German). It may not work with all models and only with certain model years but I haven't read all the details in this 14 page discussion.
I coded my instrument cluster last night to show the information from the navi and initially I got nothing in the display but I left it coded. Then I got in the car this morning to go to work and there it was working perfectly.
:p
As for retro fitting the DIS this is possible, you need to buy the stalk and code it with VAG-COM the only problem you will have is it will show the washer bottle as being empty as the DIS uses a different type of sensor in the washer bottle. I've asked my dealer to find out the sensor I need and whether I need a new bottle as well. Alternatively I believe the is a pin on the back of the cluster that you can take to ground which will make the DIS believe the bottle is full.
Whilst you’re fitting the DIS you may as well add cruise control as again it only needs activating with VAG-COM.
I brought my stalks and lower column trim from VAGPARTS but as yet I haven’t got round to fitting them.

Thanks for your help. How much did you pay for them and do you have to remove the steering wheel to fit them?

Do you still get the temperature and miles till empty or do you only get them when you stop navigation?

Jake
As my setup stands at the moment, with navi on i lose my fuel range fuction but obviously if you change the stalk you will be able to change screens. You do need to remove the steering wheel to carry out the mod though.
i have got the manual from ERWIN but for some reason it wont open at the moment. as soon as i can get it sorted i will send a copy of it to you.

Where abouts in the UK are you Jake?

As a matter of interest i just re-codded my rns-e as a cabrio unit and guess what happened?
All the same symptoms as yours.

Put it back and all is fine.
Both stalks and the lower steering column panel came to around £90 IIRC
Thanks a lot for your help Barry - that puts my mind at rest! I'm north of Ipswich in Suffolk

I'm trying to get the lower steering column panel off on my 2004 B6 S4 - undoing the 2 Torx screws and the hex bolt releases it but ...... how do you get it over the reach/rake adjustment lever? I sat in the car last night for nearly an hour trying to manoeuvre the panel over the lever without success.

What am I missing?
The recode works - turns off at the key, radio on dash etc

Thanks for your help

Barry

Have you got the part nos for the stalks and lower trim. Is the cruise stalk seperate to the indicators or integrated? Would be good to have a definitive guide if we can get this to work properly!

Thanks

Jake
I'll take a look at the boxes once im at home and let you know. The cruise stalk is seperate!
Hi Barry

Did you have any joy with those part numbers?
