I ran backup copies when I first got a pre-2010 unit 6 years ago, but I've run only genuine DVDs for the last 5+ years as I want to get the maximum life out of the lasers.
DVDs are made by stamping with a purely reflective surface. The writeable & rewriteable discs has uses dye that changes its reflectivity based on the heat of the write laser. The dimness means it is not guaranteed to be readable and the laser could try to constantly try to adjust its len's focus, thus putting more stress on the motor & mechanism.
2010+ RNS-E seems very picky with burned map DVD's.
I have a Pre 2010 RNS-E* (192 T) in my RS 6 that reads all burned NA map DVD's just fine, However I just installed a 2010 RNS-E* (193 B) unit in our B7 A4 and it will read a 2009-2010 burned map DVD just fine, but it will not read the 2010-2011 burned NA map DVD I now use in the RS 6.
(*both my units are EU->US Conversions)
Both Maps are on the same Verbatim DVD+R DL Media.
