Are you sure about that? So far everything indicated that only the A6 unit has the v-wire connected internally. Are you sure you have a 8E0 or 8P0 unit (checked with VAG-COM) and not a 4B0?
Do not buy a can bus interface, not needed
I should get a Nobel Price for this! So, did you buy interface that converts the gala speed signal to a can bus signal? I am sorry to say that you did spend about 120 Euros that could bee invested in something else. So if you have a A4 or A3 unit and you have gala signal in your car just connect it and code your unit as A6 unit, voila...it works. Please do not forgett to make reset of the unit and then go to Enginer mode and there it is! So i did this on my A4 unit, have not tested it on a A3 unit so it is up to somebody else to prove it works. I will tomorrow go for a ride and see if al works 100% .

Yes i am sure, it is not a 4B0. If the speed signal was not there it should say N.C. on that pin on the big pin label on top of the RNS-E. Thats what made me start thinking it would work. That would be really cool if that works, leaving the faceplate be the only difference between the units. That would also mean that A6 owners could retrofit a RNS-E with the newer features. Cool stuff...

Does the mean someone with an A4/S4 could put a swtich on the GALA and have Video in motion? (w/ the Dietz 1417)?

I can confirm this. As I had my unit coded as Lamborghini, I had no funktion in a tunnel. But if I code as A6, it works! So the information is right.

This may work in an A4 and other cars, but I suspect that if you did this in an A3, you wuld hit the same issues that bah35UK had where functionality is lost.

Pardon my density, but does this mean that a B6/B7 unit could be made to work in a B5 using the GALA wire simply by making this change?
If that's the case, then is the "P" or "R" unit still the best fit for a B5? Does the faceplate on a "C", "D", "H", or "F" unit fit better?

So what does this mean for pre 99.5 A6s that take the speed signal off the ABS unit....cause ive just paid for a can bus covertor.

Doesn't change anything for the pre-99.5 C5 A6 community. What you need is a CAN emulator for ignition and illumination....among other things. see my link below for all the details. I hate to ask the question again, but just to be crystal clear before I plunk down my money...
Does this mean that a B6/B7 unit could be made to work in a B5 using the GALA wire simply by making this change?
If that's the case, then is the "P" or "R" unit still the best fit for a B5? Does the faceplate on a "C", "D", "H", or "F" unit fit better?
If the A4 units have a faceplate that I won't have to use a dremmel on, I'd prefer that.
