objective::
to show some of the details for installing a Dietz 1417; Dietz 1280; Blaupunkt ME3; AUX-A/V-inputs into a '02 B6 A4 with an EU RNS-E and patched US DVD..

in the interest of time and space i will not duplicate all the very helpful information i found on the links at the bottom..

1st i have to find a place to hide everything and get access to run any wires..
[siteimg:893f70b02b]159[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
[siteimg:893f70b02b]160[/siteimg:893f70b02b]

---------------- AUX-AV-input :: not necessary, but nicer than running cables out of the glovebox door for video games or iPod ----------------

I found a nice place in the center consul to mount the AUX-AV-input..
[siteimg:893f70b02b]162[/siteimg:893f70b02b]

There is already a hole under the fuzzy floor that just needs to be lengthed a bit
[siteimg:893f70b02b]163[/siteimg:893f70b02b]

I found a nice double ended female color coded RCAs mounted in a plate at radioshack..
[siteimg:893f70b02b]161[/siteimg:893f70b02b]

I cut it down to size
[siteimg:893f70b02b]164[/siteimg:893f70b02b]

And painted it
[siteimg:893f70b02b]165[/siteimg:893f70b02b]

It matches better than I expected..
[siteimg:893f70b02b]166[/siteimg:893f70b02b]

You can see I dremeled out the left size a bit..
[siteimg:893f70b02b]167[/siteimg:893f70b02b]

Totally stealth with the fuzzy floor back in place!!..
[siteimg:893f70b02b]168[/siteimg:893f70b02b]

---------------- Dietz 1417 :: used to trick the RNS-e to think it has a OEM TV tuner and to convert standard composite video to RGB & Dietz 1280 :: used to allow video while in motion for A4 / A3 RNS-E units ----------------

i spliced CAN and some of the power/ground wires on both devices into the adapter harness so no factory wiring manipulated and everything can be remove without a trace..
[siteimg:893f70b02b]169[/siteimg:893f70b02b]

Here are all the little black boxes you will need to find a spot for
[siteimg:893f70b02b]170[/siteimg:893f70b02b]

There is plenty of space to the right of the radio.. I velcroed the 1280 and the small box for the 1417 in place there..
[siteimg:893f70b02b]171[/siteimg:893f70b02b]

Neatly tucked away (a view from the glovebox side)
[siteimg:893f70b02b]172[/siteimg:893f70b02b]

Then I velcroed the large box of the 1417 to the top of the glovebox.. in this pic you can also see i removed the glovebox light (open hole in front of the 1417) to reduce heat.. there is a another OEM spot for it to the right (not shown in the pic but you’ll see it)
[siteimg:893f70b02b]173[/siteimg:893f70b02b]

I just noticed you can see both locations in Igors pic..

You will have to cut a hole in the back of the glovebox and bend a bracket out of the way for the DVD player, but there is plenty of room.. I basically followed Igors install.. it is pretty easy..

i thought i would have to recode my EU RNS-E, but it automatically recognized it and added "TV" under the source button along with "CD" & "MP3"..
[siteimg:893f70b02b]175[/siteimg:893f70b02b]

It also shows on the DIS
[siteimg:893f70b02b]176[/siteimg:893f70b02b]

Once you start moving you will see this
[siteimg:893f70b02b]177[/siteimg:893f70b02b]

If you have the A6 unit, you can simply put a switch on your GALA signal, but for the A4 / A3 you will need the Dietz 1280.. in either case, you will not be able to navigate when the 1280 is active..

I would like to use an OEM switch in the future, but I thought this looked OK for now, and is very easy to access (or replace the piece if I want to remove it)
[siteimg:893f70b02b]178[/siteimg:893f70b02b]

After you turn on the 1280, a few seconds later the video will return and your passengers will be happy..

---------------- Conclusions ----------------
Everything actually worked out easier and better than expected, except for 1 issue..

i was hoping to use the AUX input on the ME3 DVD player to pipe in my iPod..

but I found the audio is muted unless there is a video input..

it could be a function of the ME3 DVD player; the Dietz 1417; or the RNS-E itself.. i havent had a chance to trouble shoot yet..

any ideas??..

i have verified the muting is soley a function of the ME3 DVD player.. i was hoping for a menu / setup way around this, but i havent found it yet..

after talking to a friend about his set up i decided to try just "Y"ing the DVD player and an aux-A/V jack into the 1417.. well it works!!..

obviously you can only use one at a time, but there is a trick.. the ME3 has 12v ign and 12v constant - in this case both need to be switched.. even if the power is off - if the 12v constant is still connected the video from the aux will be corrupted.. fortunately that is how i had mine wired anyway..

so i am very happy to say that my Dietz 1417/1280; Blaupunkt ME3 DVD player; and AUX-input (audio only compatible) works exactly the way i wanted it to (though, not exactly connected the way i planned)..

hope this helps..

I ordered mine in April but DHL lost my package and took some time to file claims etc. Fortunately AudiA4B6US helped me to get another one so I should be able to test it with my US unit soon ;)

I don't see any reason why TV shouldn't work but we will see ;)

Troy,
I'm glad to see that you fixed the ME3 input issue for your ipod. When you mentioned "friend", were you referring to me? Either way, I'm excited that you figured it out....good to know.

actually i should have said friends.. yes i did mean you and all your ME3 guidance, and also a guy i know in my area has 2 audio sources "Y"ed into a blitzsafe CD changer emulator and it worked as long as you could completely cut power to the device you are not using.. so i figured i would try it with audio and video..

have you had a chance to install your powered antenna yet??..

cool. Good to know.

I have a whole host of electronics mods (Moto BT kit, amp TV antenna etc) that I want to do at once...because they require me to pull out the trim for the A-pillar....so I'm planning around that.

Will keep you posted.

Fritzner,

Are you sure that the audio muting is a function of the ME3 DVD player? If so, Blaupunkt should have some explaining to do. This quote is straight off of their website concerning the ME3.

"The sleek faceplate of the DVD-ME3 features an attractive blue LCD display and a set of RCA A/V input connections to allow easy connection of a portable MP3 player, camcorder, or video game console."

I believe the ipod could be considered a "portable MP3 player" so, it sounds like it should work. Perhaps a call to Blaupunkt customer service might be in order?

very interesting.. i tested it thoroughly and there similar reports from others -- and my ME3 mutes the audio as soon as a video signal is disconnected..

maybe there is a menu setting that can be changed -- or perhaps there is new firmware available..

i will try to look into it more soon..

thanks for the lead.. please report back if you learn any more..

Yup, I noticed that too. That statement falls under the category of "creative marketing". By portable MP3 player, they must mean a Playstation or X-box? I tried all the different menu options to no avail. I'll have to check again....but the owners manual isn't real clear when it comes to this area.

Owner's manual (the closest you will get is page 14; no mention of portable MP3 player):
http://www.blaupunktusa.com/NR/rdonlyres/2BADFCD9-2D7F-4D5C-9F13-63ADCEFA4F32/0/ENG_DVDME2_3Man.pdf

Are there any lawyers on this board? Maybe we should file a class action lawsuit against Blaupunkt for false advertising etc. :D

1 is the 1280

the other 2 are the 1417.. the 1417 is made up of 2 boxes..

-- one is essentially the RGB converter, input jacks and contrast/color adjustment..
-- the other is a CAN device it seems to tell the RNS-E a video source is connected -- an OEM TV tuner emulator you might say..

hope yours arrives soon

I just got it today and it's only one box...contrast and other controls are inluded. That's why I was so suprised

[siteimg:2c6a8872f8]220[/siteimg:2c6a8872f8]

I found out that Dietz modified their adapter and now it's one box only.
So you have one thick cable coming out of the box and 4 wires.
That's good because I don't really have a space behind inside dashboard =D>

I also got 1280

but I should get this one...which is more plug & play

After waiting almost half a year for the adapter we expect some results with the US unit and not just pictures :)
