objective::
to show some of the details for installing a Dietz 1417; Dietz 1280; Blaupunkt ME3; AUX-A/V-inputs into a '02 B6 A4 with an EU RNS-E and patched US DVD..
in the interest of time and space i will not duplicate all the very helpful information i found on the links at the bottom..
1st i have to find a place to hide everything and get access to run any wires..
[siteimg:893f70b02b]159[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
[siteimg:893f70b02b]160[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
---------------- AUX-AV-input :: not necessary, but nicer than running cables out of the glovebox door for video games or iPod ----------------
I found a nice place in the center consul to mount the AUX-AV-input..
[siteimg:893f70b02b]162[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
There is already a hole under the fuzzy floor that just needs to be lengthed a bit
[siteimg:893f70b02b]163[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
I found a nice double ended female color coded RCAs mounted in a plate at radioshack..
[siteimg:893f70b02b]161[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
I cut it down to size
[siteimg:893f70b02b]164[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
And painted it
[siteimg:893f70b02b]165[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
It matches better than I expected..
[siteimg:893f70b02b]166[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
You can see I dremeled out the left size a bit..
[siteimg:893f70b02b]167[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
Totally stealth with the fuzzy floor back in place!!..
[siteimg:893f70b02b]168[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
---------------- Dietz 1417 :: used to trick the RNS-e to think it has a OEM TV tuner and to convert standard composite video to RGB & Dietz 1280 :: used to allow video while in motion for A4 / A3 RNS-E units ----------------
i spliced CAN and some of the power/ground wires on both devices into the adapter harness so no factory wiring manipulated and everything can be remove without a trace..

Here are all the little black boxes you will need to find a spot for
[siteimg:893f70b02b]170[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
There is plenty of space to the right of the radio.. I velcroed the 1280 and the small box for the 1417 in place there..
[siteimg:893f70b02b]171[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
Neatly tucked away (a view from the glovebox side)
[siteimg:893f70b02b]172[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
Then I velcroed the large box of the 1417 to the top of the glovebox.. in this pic you can also see i removed the glovebox light (open hole in front of the 1417) to reduce heat.. there is a another OEM spot for it to the right (not shown in the pic but you’ll see it)
[siteimg:893f70b02b]173[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
I just noticed you can see both locations in Igors pic..
You will have to cut a hole in the back of the glovebox and bend a bracket out of the way for the DVD player, but there is plenty of room.. I basically followed Igors install.. it is pretty easy..

i thought i would have to recode my EU RNS-E, but it automatically recognized it and added "TV" under the source button along with "CD" & "MP3"..
[siteimg:893f70b02b]175[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
It also shows on the DIS
[siteimg:893f70b02b]176[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
Once you start moving you will see this
[siteimg:893f70b02b]177[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
If you have the A6 unit, you can simply put a switch on your GALA signal, but for the A4 / A3 you will need the Dietz 1280.. in either case, you will not be able to navigate when the 1280 is active..
I would like to use an OEM switch in the future, but I thought this looked OK for now, and is very easy to access (or replace the piece if I want to remove it)
[siteimg:893f70b02b]178[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
After you turn on the 1280, a few seconds later the video will return and your passengers will be happy..
[siteimg:893f70b02b]179[/siteimg:893f70b02b]
---------------- Conclusions ----------------
Everything actually worked out easier and better than expected, except for 1 issue..
i was hoping to use the AUX input on the ME3 DVD player to pipe in my iPod..
but I found the audio is muted unless there is a video input..
it could be a function of the ME3 DVD player; the Dietz 1417; or the RNS-E itself.. i havent had a chance to trouble shoot yet..
any ideas??..
