How does this unit work? Is it an electronic switch, i.e. when you hit Nav it turns the gala back on automaticaly? Or is it an external switch that you do yourself?

It's an external box, controlled by an external switch that you have to add, that filters the speed signal out of the CAN bus to the RNS-E.

It's not integrated with the RNS-E.
