continuing questions re possible RNS-E into S8

thanks to several members for emails and suggestions..

i am trying to finalize my list of issues to consider before taking the plunge into getting an rns-e into my 2003 s8 (us spec).

some info about the s8:
-oem is bose sym II
-dimensions (approx) of my s8 faceplate is 9 1/4" wide at top and 8 7/8" across bottom. height appears to be 4 15/16" all the way across.
-color dis displays nav, tire pressure, and other warnings/indicators.

question 1:
do i get a4 or a6 version? there seems to be some uncertainty..

question 2:
controller between seats for these features: will this remain functional?

q3:
will steering wheel controls work? including hands free phone?

q4:
can i use existing gps antenna?

1: See quicklinks for D2 S8 install. I believe a A3 unit is a better fit because of the rounded upper corners.

2: Controller between seats will not have any control over RNS-E.

3: MFSW should work the same as it is CAN-based. Not sure about phone controls. search this site on MFSW for more details

4: Yes, you will need gps extension cable. See quicklinks for nene's RNS-E install in his RS6 (very similar to what you want to do)

Happy reading!!
IIRC craig used an A4 faceplate with an A6 unit. It looks like the A4 unit can be coded for an A6 to accept speed over CAN but Craig also said that is facelift A8 supports both speed over CAn and speed over the v-wire.
teddy b, you are certainly an authority here, but now i am thoroughly confused!

now i dont know whether to go with a4, a6, or now A3? i was under the impression that the a4 faceplate was the best fit, but that the A6 unit reads the speed signal in proper format?

understood, but will it still control the dis at all? i am assuming no nav will be avail in dis but i want to see tire pressure and other features.

will do. btw i dont use the handset and cradle, i am referring to the mfsw buttons and voice commands for the phone.

i am just extending from behind the dis to the rns-e , correct?
this would not require hardwiring work , right?

thanks much , john.
To try to answer #2 further, it is my opinion that your controller between the seats will certainly still control the other functions of your DIS such as TPMS.

The official term for this controller is the "board computer function selector switch II, in console".
ok...some feedback.

#1: I might have been mistaken; I thought it was an A3 unit...but I'm not sure. That's why I directed you to the link within quicklinks for more details.

#2: See NSX Jr's reply

#3: Everything should work the same...in theory. Just make sure your plug/play adaptor has the extra 10 pin connector for tele mute, tele speaker + and tele speaker -.

#4: Again, see quicklinks for nene's RNS-E install in his RS6 (very similar to what you want to do). You will be extending this from the factor nav CD drive in the drivers' trunk area.

Also, you might want to consider adding the OEM SAT tuner...if you live in North America. It's a nice little addition that was never offered on the D2 A8/S8.
