But, wouldn't inserting a US disc with a newer firmware revision cause the unit to update itself with the US programming, allowing it to work... or am i way off base here.

The DVD have a region identifier which prevents a unit to read a DVD from the other region. Both the software as well as the map are flagged with a region. Inserting an unmodified DVD in a unit from the other region doesn't do anything (including not reading the DVD as map). It is possible to "patch" the map to work with units from the other regions but it has not been done (or reported to be done) to load the software from the other region on a RNS-E unit.

It seems like an interesting idea though, right? Seems to have some plausibilty to it. Just wish I had the technical know how to try it.
