I can help you by making a backup of your existing NAV DVD. Only for personal use, one backup is allowed!!
I'll appreciate your help on this. Today I was quite surprised when trying to back-up and discover the original DVD was ~7GB!!

I use RNS-E and the 2005 version of Western Europe Road Map

Thanks a lot in advance!

I use 2 Sony's, a 500A for reading and a 710A for writing as it's a DL disk.

As for the disks, I use RiDisc DVD+R DL

And Alcohol 120% is the software.

I have that writer, but just the writer, not the casing, it's installed in my own USB 2 case, but the same principal.

Thanks for the replies..

does it matter what type 'read medium' you use?
I have a rather old DVD unit in my Dell system(3 years old).. is this DVD device able to read the Navi DVD or do I need a modern DVD-reader?

If I can use any type Dual Layer DVD writer this was the last question I have!

Thanks guys..

There are lots of myths surrounding what media, readers and writers to use for copying various disks. I may have just fell lucky with mine, everything worked first time.

But when I was creating a SW update disk for my old CD based navi, I tried about 10 different brands of CDR before I could find one that would read.

Thank for the info Craig, it looks still quite complicate to get a back-up done, and people from NAVTEQ in Spain sent me to the car dealer to get any "back-up". Good busine$$ they have....

I'll look for any friend with a DL DVD Writer and try to get it done. I'll post any results.

Thanks,

DVD burner

Powertony,

You need a brand new DVD-burner, a so called Double Layer Burner. Normal dvd burners can burn max 4,7 gig. Double Layer burners can burn 8,5 gig data on 1 DVD. It doesnt. matter which Double Layer hardware you use, but it's a brand new technology so older pc's doesn't have this burner 'on board'. You als need a lot of harddisk capacity, because when you make a back up the data must be copied to your HD first. For the navigation DVD this will be approx 7,2 gig. Last but not least: you need the (expensive) double layer + DVD-Recordable discs, which can content 8,5 gig on a disc. The brands i use: Imation and Philips, but I don't know wether you can buy them in the US. I'm from The Netherlands...

hello,
Is there any particular protection on the DVD (Safedisc 3 type ) ?
No, you can copy the files to your hard disk (using Windows) and then write them back to a DVD+DL and it still works.

i do not agree with the way to copy the dvd tot the hard disk. For sure there is a protection on the DVD, and simply copying the content to the HD and then burn it wil not work (properly)!
Well, that is exactly how I made my copy. Of course being in the US, I had to modify some files before I wrote it to the DVD+DL. But I used windows to copy the files to the hard disk in the first place.

i sucessfully made a back-up for myself using Nero 6.6 and verbatim media by creating an image of the original and then burning a new DL DVD from the image, but i had some trouble at first..

my 1st attempt with verbatim media was sketchy - some times it worked, sometimes it didnt.. so i tried memorex and my PC wouldnt even burn to it..

so after some digging around, i found new firmware for my dual layer burner(NEC 6500A).. after loading the new firmware to my drive both verbatim and memorex work flawlessly..

good luck..
