Audi A6 10/99 CAN

2340 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  TeddyBGame
I have a 2000 (10/99) Audi A6 4.2L with Symthony, Bose, Factory Phone and CD navigation. It also has steering wheel controls for the radio/CD. And I do have the digital clock and date under the tac.

My Audi dealer has a 4B0 035 192 RX, will it be possible to install this unit and what functionality, if any, will I lose in the steering wheel or instrument panel?

Thanks for any help.

Mike,
I would consult the DVD forum on this site. Your "R" unit is a DVD RNS-E (US version). How much did you get it for? The going rate is $2700+ from the dealers (no map disk).

I find it odd that your 2000 A6 4.2 doesn't have a digital clock. That sucks!!

As for interfacing the instrument cluster...this might be a problem area. Because you don't have a digital clock (which means you can't tap into the CANbus)...you'll probably loose:
- no radio/CD display on cluster
- RNS-E won't illuminate when you turn on your parking lights
- RNS-E won't shut off when you turn off the ignition (you'll need to click the power button everytime)

Also, the RNS-E will have a different color plastic (matte black) vs. the shiney black of your current Sym I HU and climate control unit.

See what the folks in the DVD forum say...just link back to this thread so they see my response.

Thanks Ted, but I do indeed have the Digital Clock and Date, so does this change things?
I would check the wiring diagrams for your car. If you have the digital clock it is likely that you have the required CAN (infotainment/display) behind your instrument cluster. In this case getting the basic signals for the RNS-E is no problem and your DIS will continue to work.

Your multi function steering wheel communicates most likely over the 3-wire connection with your radio, this is something you would lose when you upgrade to the RNS-E. Or you would need to upgrade the steering wheel controller as well. This is something you car change later, once you confirmed that the controls are indeed not working anymore.

Certain A6 instrument clusters do not support the time signal. I Haven't seen yet a black and white "this works and this doesn't" list but you might see that your arrival time is messed up if your cluster is to old.

Good luck...

My bad...I misread the post. Rookie move by my part.

Then the only issue will be cosmetic (color of RNS-E faceplate and climate control).

Dirk summed up my thoughts completely.

For the steering wheel control module (audi part# 4B0 907 487 F), you'd need to buy a new one...and wire into the CANbus. Their hasn't been too many A6 owners do this mod yet...so this is a new development. So, the s.wheel can be fixed....but will require some extra wiring and parts. I would stay tuned over the next few months as a solution will probably be posted by someone with a 2000/2001 A6.

Good luck!

Nope, I don't have the MF steering wheel...I'm currently installing the tiptronic version with the +/- buttons for "thumb-action" shifting (I had the RS6 paddle version but decided that I like the S6 version better).

Bjarne and I are currently working on a source for a used control module so he can do the the upgrade/mod. Again, this is only applicable to those with a non CAN-based MF steering wheel. Therefore, those models should include:

2000-2001 C5 A6/allroad
2000-2001 D2 A8 (applicable to RNS-D and RNS-E (with faceplate mod) upgrades)
2000-2001 B5 A4 (although, I doubt the B5 was ever offered with a MF wheel)
