Audi A4 B6, Has anyone Retrofitted Cruise Control

23771 Views 54 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Volki
Hi All

Now that I have retrofitted full leather and the RNS-E I am thinking of trying to retrofit Cruise Control. Has anyone managed to do this yet and if so can they help with part numbers etc? I am also interested if this would mean that I would get full DIS as I only currently have miles til empty etc....

THanks

Scott

If you already have a multifunction steering wheel, this will be a piece of cake. You will only need the cruise control stalk... it just plugs into the steering column electronics unit that is already installed in your car. Then you'll probably have to VAG something.

Since the car is drive-by-wire, you shouldn't need any mechanical parts to make it work.
Unfortunately I don't have a Multifunction wheel already.

Cheers
Well, you'll probably need the steering column electornics module as well. If you have a good dealership, they can probably tell you what would be involved in your case.
I had to have the SCSM replaced on my B6 S4 to a newer version that recognised the cruise control.

You have to code the SCSM to recognise the cruise control, and also login to the engine ECU to make it look for the cruise control information on the powertrain CAN bus. Both need VAG-COM.

You also need the cruise control switch/stalk, and a new lower steering column shroud.

I got the parts from VagParts, fitted the cruise control and steering column shroud myself, but got my local Audi dealer to fit the new SCSM since you have to remove the steering wheel and airbag to fit it.

Hi

Thanks for the info. What year was your car and how do you know if you need the SCSM? Also do Vagparts have a website and where are they based?

Thanks

Scott
The SCSM is what I was referring to. I think your only chance of having the correct one for cruise control was if you already had a multifunction steering wheel installed from the factory.

I see, sorry for being thick!

Any idea how much it is likely to cost me?

Thanks
I updated the post above with the parts view picture. The SCSM is #8 in the picture.

I believe for a B6 this is part number 8E0 953 549L (without heated steering wheel, or "M" with heated wheel)
Approx Audi parts price $277 USD

The cruise control stalk (#4) is 8E0 953 521D 4PK
Approx Audi parts price $60 USD

The torx bolt (#3) for the cruise stalk is N90906801
Approx Audi parts price $0.15 USD

The lower column trim depends on whether you have an auto or manual tranny:
Auto: 8E0 953 512 J
Manual: 8E0 953 512 L
Part number must include color code as suffix (UK colors may be different):
26Z: Dark Grey
3ZQ Maritime Blue
42R Grey Beige
6PS Black

Approx Audi parts price $60 USD

Also, please check these part numbers with your dealer, the RHD versions in the UK may have completely different parts!

Thanks for that. I always thought that the Cruise was on the Indicator stalk along with the DIS buttons like the TT I had before my A4???

Thanks

Scott
Not on US version B6 A4. Maybe the UK RHD version is different? If so, you can forget everything I have posted here... the old style cruise control (like on the TT, B5, and C5) does not use the SCSM.
All B6 have a seperate cruise control switch. B5 was different and current TT is still based on MKIV platform (A3 8L, Golf IV) which had the combined switch.
I see, sorry to confuse the matter!

I thought that I would get the dealer to enable full DIS at the same time as I only have the normal miles till empty version. Will I need more hardware for this as well?

Thanks
Well, at the least you'll need the wiper stalk with the DIS reset and scroll buttons that you likely don't have presently.
hi guys

any idea how to remove the lower trim panel to expose the stalks, ignition etc?

Thanks

scott
Not sure, probably just remove some bolts from the bottom of the trim and it will pop off.

First you have to remove the lower dash panel (hex bolts).

Then undo the bolts fixing the top steering column cover (2 small torx bolts) and remove it.

Then undo the two bolts (1 torx and 1 hex IIRC) and rotate the bottom steering column cover through 90 degrees to be able to get it over the reach/rake locking lever.

I tried doing it without removing the lower dash panel, but you can't rotate the bottom steering column cover to clear the locking lever with it in place.
Got it !

Picked up the Cruise Stalk, New Wiper Stalk with DIS controls and the lower panel today. Had it all in within about 40 minutes. Booked into the dealer on Friday to have it coded so I will let you all know how it goes!

Fingers crossed!

So you did not need to replace your SCSM?
No, Andy at VAG PARTS (very helpful) advised me that some cars already had the SCSM's fitted to support Cruise. I opened mine up to check yesterday and I had the pins required to connect the Cruise straight in.
