If this is a US 2001 A4 then it's a B5 model and it's not that easy.

The RS4 guy (link is under helpful links here) did manage to install the A6 RNS-E (4B0) into his B5 and got the navigation working using the speed signal from the instrument cluster. However, the 4B0 doesn't fit perfectly into the B5 console and will need some modifications on the faceplate. From the pictures he posted it looks that at least there is no gap between the unit and the console.

The A6 B6 unit (8E0 or 8H0) will not work because it needs speed over CAN. There is an adapter on ebay.de which is supposed to convert analogue signals into a CAN signal but I haven't read anywhere that someone got it actually to work this way.

And there is currently a RNS-E on ebay.de where they say it's faceplate has been modified to fit in an A4 B5. However, the unit is a 8E0 which is not wide enough to fit in the console and it requires the speed over CAN.

If you are brave and willing to risk some money you can give it a try. But it may not work as expected...

There is no faceplate for your car and your car is too old for the RNS-E. If you browse through the postings here and on the yahoo forum you will see what's possible and what isn't and what has been done so far and what hasn't.
