Anybody out there who knows what a PIC is?

OK, the RNS-E is nice but there are still a lot of things missing. After Proxus confirmed that the US RNS-E can indeed use the video in, I had a couple of ideas and would be interested to hear what people think about this.

There are in-car DVD players out there on the market which support almost everything you can think of. I found this one which supports not only video and MP3 DVDs but also has a USB port for storage devices. Together with a 80GB USB hard disk and the Dietz adapters a Phatbox would have no chance anymore (sorry Ted)

Since the OEM TV tuner can be controlled via RNS-E I guess there is some communication going on via CAN. The difficulty will be to figure out how this communication looks like and then build a black box with a programmable IC which translates CAN to infrared (or serial if the player supports this).

The guys over at 3pmdev.de are trying to do similar with a Linux based PC but this may be to complex just for MP3 and video.

And there a other guys over in Germany who figured out a way to enable video while driving just with a VAG-COM change. So, this is possible as well and would be another requirement to get this working.

So, is there anybody out there who is working in electronics or familiar with such products who could comment? How complicate or unrealistic is this idea? If you are interested in this as well, what would you be willing to pay for such a black box (without the player and Dietz adapters which are extra)?

Who, what, when, how? Are these people on another forum? Do we have any clue how to do this yet?

The USB connectivity is a really neat idea on that DVD player, but it makes you wonder 1. If you could really hook a HDD up to it and have the player read MP3s (perhaps if it was formatted as FAT/FAT16?) 2. How you would navigate through the songs. 4. How you could tell what album/song you're listening to (I'm assuming it must display something on the RNS-E) 4. If you could watch movies off the HDD.

Wouldn't it be neat to simply buy a 300GB HDD and just copy a bunch of movies and music to it? You'd have entertainment enough to last for tons of road trips.
The VAG-COM hack appears on ebay.de regularly, they are not on a forum or share how they do it and you have to go with your car to them to get it installed. But it is possible, that's what matters. And this hack doesn't break navi (as the Dietz does), it just allows video in motion.

The player comes with a USB adapter for different media, CF, SD, etc. and I supposed a HD will work just fine. All you may need to do is to provide more power in case the USB port cannot power a HD.

From what I understood you get a menu on the screen to choose from with the remote, similar to any other MP3 player. Since it's a video player all you need is the Dietz. But without video in motion you couldn't see anything in TV mode while driving, that's why I thought that VAG-COM hack would be nice.

To make that really cool there should be some black box which takes the TV tuner commands from the RNS-E and translates those to IR commands for the player. This way you wouldn't need the remote.

I don't think it can play MP4 from USB (have seen nobody mentioning this so far) but I think DVD MP4/DIVX is not to bad and worth the money already.

that is too bad that those guys do not share information as the people on this forum does..

anyone have any ideas how to do this??.. i have already spent the money and installed the 1280, but it would be nice to have navi too!!..
