Adding multifunction wheel buttons without the wheel?

3095 Views 14 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  2EURO
What would it take to add the multifunction wheel buttons to a car not equiped with the multifunction wheel?

I know there is a controller involved, but that is the extent of my knowledge.

In addition to the Radio control, I have a Can Bus box that displays the Valentine One information in the DIS, and there are many more functions that I can't use since I don't have the buttons.

oh DAMN! I GOTS to get that!..

All you need is the CANbus multifunction controller for the steering wheel.. and the steering wheel with the buttons. Inside the steering wheel is a control unit that takes all the button presses and sends it over a single wire to the control unit. The control unit then talks to everything else over canbus. Click my sig for a little info on the unit. In summary, you'll need:

-MFSW control unit 4B0 907 487F
-steering wheel buttons
-inner steering wheel control unit
So best course of action is to buy the control box and try to find a used steering wheel to gut?
Absolutely. The control unit is $185 from 1stvwparts. They are near impossible to find on the used market. I can provide all the wiring diagrams you'll need for the control unit and steering wheel if you want.
That would be great. Thanks!

I want V1 displayed like that too  That's so cool.
Are you goinf to proceed with this project, that would be great
Here's a link to the MFSW wiring diagrams.

http://webpages.charter.net/sheandlee/audiMFSW-CAN.pdf

The pin assignments for the MFSW control unit are:

1. CAN L
2. GND (only with tip controls also)
3. CAN H
4. N.C.
5. N.C
6. K-line (officially L-line, but K works fine)
7. Tip shifter pin 4 (only with tip controls also)
8. N.C.
9. N.C.
10. KL.31 (main ground)
11. Tip shifter pin 5 (only with tip controls also)
12. KL.15 (acc power)
13. KL.30 (battery power)
14. N.C.
15. 58s (button illumination)
16. N.C.
17. Heated Seat switch pin 4 (only for heated strg wheel)
18. Data from steering wheel

The only problem is in Nav mode you only get the top line of data. I am working with the company that makes these devices to try and find a possible solution. Not really a big deal though. :)

I may proceed with the MSFW projection. It depends on if I can find a steering wheel cheap enough. It would be nice is someone just made an interface that converted your own buttons to the single wire for the input to the MSFW controller.

Thanks for the diagrams NSX. :)
stoodo,
if you have a B6 A4, then you probably have the three spoke sport wheel (with or without tip buttons). Keep in mind, that you will need:

1) new four spoke MF wheel (hard to find used)
2) new four spoke MF airbag with buttons (also hard to find)
3) new SC ring (specific to the b6 platform)

...in addition to the MF controller that Lee mentioned.

In fact, there is someone on audiworld.com/classifieds that is trying to swap a MF wheel for a sport setup (Maury M?? I think). Start there. I bet you could find a few folks in the B6 community that would swap with you.

...or start looking through ebay and ebay.de for the parts. The SC ring will be hard to find used...so you might have to spend the $300+ on the new part.

Good luck!

If he's going to mount the buttons somewhere else, he won't need the SC ring. He talked about gutting the steering wheel earlier so I assume he's just going to mount the buttons somewhere else.

That is correct. :)
edit... answered my own question... i guess it will work without MF steering wheels, its just you wont be able to use more functions of it.

correct?
one more question... i guess i'd need to pick up one of those CAN BUS adaptors; for this to happen, right?
