Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Retrofit on A6

Hi all,

after a long time of hesitation, I have decided to go and try to retrofit the ACC to my 2005 A6. I know there are at least two other members of this forum who are somewhere in the process of doing this.

Now, my knowledge of the whole issue is somewhat limited as I don't have access to any literature covering this and am relying purely on ETKA/ELSA and the knowledge of all the people on this forum.

I am going to put down my achievements and some assumptions as I go along with this project and would be really grateful if other members (especially with those with enough experience and knowledge) would share their comments and help where they can. There is no way I can do this on my own, without your help :).

So, till now, I have got together the following parts:

4F0 907 561 A - ACC radar with control unit - 45 EUR from ebay
4E0 953 521 A - the ACC-capable GRA stalk - 130 EUR from ebay (together with the canceling ring, the wiper stalk, light stalk and steering column control unit)
4F0 920 931 P - Colour DIS ACC-capable instrument cluster - 500 EUR from Craigyb

I will still need the following parts:

4F0 614 517 J - ABS control unit
4F0 807 111 C - front reinforcement bar, behind the grill
4F0 XXX XXX X - the front grill with radar window (not sure about PN, no access to ETKA now)
Some brake thrust sensors and brake hoses - not sure about that yet - any help from anybody?
The wiring harness for the radar - probably most difficult as it may have to be custom-made - any suggestions anybody?

Still early stages for the project but I am hoping that I'm at least on the right track.

Will be looking forward to your comments.

AJAX
Yes you are certainly on the right direction and the front grill PN shoud be
4E0 853 651 AD 1QP if your car is a quattro+6-8 cyl.
Have you seen in my thread about the brake-sensors here:
http://www.navplus.us/forums/showthread.php?t=8826&page=3
The wiring harness is done by four wires not so complicated see my thread.
I hope that your very old and cheap Radar Sensor will be working.
If you have any question I'm here.
Good luck

Anybody knowledgeable enough, could you please check the following two part numbers and see if they could be used in a 2005 A6 3.0 TDI quattro for retrofitting the ACC?

4F0 910 517 AC
4F0 910 517 AA

They are both ABS control units. From what I can see in ETKA, they should be ok - the AC one is from a 2007 car and according to some of you, 2007 models already have the ABS unit that is needed for ACC. The AA version is an earlier iteration but may not be correct. I cannot tell.

Thanks
AJAX
No as you can see in the picture below anyone of those P.N is correct.
The right PR to search for Adaptive Cruise Control is 8T4 and according with Etka are
HW.4F0 614 517 H - SW.4F0 910 517 B
or
HW.4F0 614 517 J - SW.4F0 910 517 C

Hi Seve, i was not sure that this works on all ecu/engine versions. Also excuse my ignorance but what is GRA?

Thanks!
The GRA is the Geschwindigkeitsregelanlage in german, the CRUISE CONTROL in english.

By the way I should do the ACC retrofit in my Q7 on the next future so I'm very interested to read your thread.

Seve, how sure are you about the login-II codes for disabling/enabling ACC. I used the codes, and now i have an error on the engine "Missing Message from Power Train Data Bus".

The ugly part is that the gear is locked in 3rd and i can not move the car at all. When i put the car in Drive the gear display in the instrument cluster PRNDS turns RED and the engine MIL is ON.

I think i did something VERY wrong in the Engine ECU. How can i reverse it?

PLEASE HELP!!!!!
Neo what exactly did you do?
I never saw that kind of error in my A8 and I don't think it should be related to the Login anyway you should erase all the fault from the engine and from the ABS and here the procedure from AUDI followed by me:

On a vehicle with ACC control unit, ACC must be enabled and coded in the engine control unit.

Parallel procedure via self-diagnosis to Guided Fault Finding
On diagnostic tester 5051 or 5052 select self-diagnosis:

Switch on ignition
Select 01-Engine electronics and code 2
Disable CCS via login code 16167
Switch off ignition and wait 10 seconds
Switch on ignition
Select 01-Engine electronics and code 2
Activate traction control via login code 13647
Switch off ignition and wait 10 seconds
End

Note on activation of ACC system

The ABS/ESP control unit must be free of faults for ACC operation! Both fault lamps in the dash panel insert must be off.

After disconnecting terminal 30 (or the battery) a steering angle sender calibration must be performed

.

i think the code for enabling ACC (traction control) is not working, at least for my TCU. The errors i have now are:

Engine
1.Control module incorrectly coded
2.Implausible signal from TCU - Open circuit

Trasnmission Control Unit
1.Implausible signal form engine control unit - MIL ON

Acc/Start Auth. Control
1.Gear Shift Position P switch - Implausible signal

All this errors came on after i inserted the login-II code for activating ACC.

WHAT I DID:
1.I installed the ACC switch and coded it to the stearring wheel electronics (second to last digit is now 5 instead of 4).
2.Added in installation list of the gateway the ACC controller
3.Coded the ACC in the instrument cluster.
4.Checked the ACC coding.
5.Disabled the ACC heater in ACC adaptation channel 3.

I have no other errors except the 3 errors above, based on my understanding i think it is a communication problem between engine and trasnmission caused by the activation of the ACC.

Do you have the codes to deactivate the acc and re-enable the cruise control, i can disconnect the acc sensor, and investigate further but i have to be able to drive the car.

Thank you for your help.
Yes if you want to deactivate everything you have to enter:

Code 16167 ACC/GRA Deactivation

and the others are:

CSS - GRA Activation code 11463
ACC Activation code 13647

Did you check in ELSA for the Q7 ACC operations?

My heart is beating again.
I deactivated ACC and enabled CCS and everything came back to normal.

The only explanation i have right now is the following:

My engine ECU has an ABT software. It is possible the login codes for this software to be different. I will check with ABT tomorrow if this was the problem and let you know.

My ACC project is on hold for the moment as activation of this function on the engine control unit disables the car totally and results in communication errors between ECU and TCU.

Thank you a lot for all your help.
GREAT NEWS:D:D Neo in the meantime I tried to see on ELSAWIN but I didn't find any code unfortunately...they only mention the VAS 5051B procedure but without any code and also on Ross-tech Wiki I didn't find any information about the ACC. Check with ABT for your ECU and let me know.
My friend Emil alias audiR8 probably can tell us something more about codes for Q7 \\:D/

Honestly if you are using the original gateway without a specific ACC one the problems on ACC activation become more simple to understand
As told by Craig an ACC gateway WANTS the Distance regulation active otherwise a fault is always written and the fact you have no error on yours confirms that theory.
I believe also that the ABT remap has nothing to do with the ECU's Power Train coding.

On my old A8 MY 06 I had to enter the code 16167 in 01 Engine just to deactivate ACC/GRA in LOGIN-11 not in Security Access-16.

Micky I' m sorry for the new owner of your S6 but I'm ready to personally come to extract the units from your trunk.
About the ACC deactivation first you have to do a Steering Angle Sensor Calibration with VCDS and after erasing all the ABS error you will have access to the Engine Login.

@a4ss4abt: I got your ECU... :) it's on the desk... I thought it was on the door, not in the trunk side... well, now I have to check if it will work on my new 4G before saying it is available for you, but I guess it won't...
In fact....it is only for me.

Stefano i suggest to code 0031168 because you have a 6 cylinder look here:

CONTROLLER 13 Autodistance Radar sensor controller has to be coded following this label:
Position 1: Engine coding
1XXXX: 8-cylinder (4.2-litre petrol engine and 4.0-litre TDI engine and 4.2-litre TDI and 4.2-litre FSI)
2XXXX: 8-cylinder (3.7 litre petrol)
3XXXX: 6-cylinder MPI (3.0 litre with Multitronic gearbox "01J") and 6-cylinder TDI (3.0 litre with 6-speed gearbox "09L") and 6-cylinder FSI (3.2 litre with Multitronic gearbox "01J") and 6-cylinder FSI (2.8 litre AVS with Multitronic gearbox "01J")
4XXXX: 12-cylinder 6.0 litre petrol engine and 10-cylinder FSI 5.2 litre petrol engine
Position 2: Country coding 1
A 1 is always entered at this position
Position 3: Body coding
XX1XX: Standard body
XX2XX: Stretched body
Note on position 3:
This coding adapts the vehicle mass and wheelbase accordingly.
Position 4: Country coding 2
XXX1X: USA (mph)
XXX2X: Canada (km/h)
XXX3X: ----------------------------
XXX4X: Japan
XXX5X: RoW (mph) (RoW = Rest of the World)
XXX6X: RoW (km/h)
Position 5: Optional extras (added together)
XXXX1: Vehicle with trailer hitch and/or Rear Seat Entertainment system fitted- If one or both of the systems is/are fitted, the adaption value is always 1!!
XXXX4: Vehicle with one-touch memory
XXXX8: Without optional extras
If no optional extras are coded, the coding value 8 is entered

Stefano If the ENGINE and ABS have some faults you can be sure the ACC cannot absolutely work.
You must erase the faults. I remember I had the ACC stuck by a missing steering angle calibration. Did you do it?

Your Radar is older than mine anyway look the errors I had on my A8:

after this I did the new steering angle calibration and my ENGINE accepted the Login code 13167 to activate the ADR.

In fact I posted the scan of Controller 13 . On 01 Engine and 03 ABS there were no errors.

Off course my first ACC radar gave me similar issues and I had to replace it with another working one.

I'm glad for you Stefano!!.... would be time to deal with ACC also in my A5.....

It's a single RADAR SENSOR PN. 8K0 907 561 B and I've lost one at a very low price this week......+ç*?/!
